Two Months Later
"I can't believe you've never been on a roller coaster Vera. That's just crazy," Foster comments as we're walking into the carnival. Its winter break and the both of us decided to stay on campus, which has caused us to hang out every day now. Foster found out about a winter carnival being held not too far from campus so here we are. "It's not the craziest thing, lots of people haven't," I tell him as we're handed our tickets. "You're right. People with a fear of heights haven't, but that doesn't include you because you're not afraid of anything except spiders," he jokes as we begin to walk around. "Ha. Ha. Are we going to go on the roller coaster now?" I ask. Foster grabs my hand all of a sudden and pulls me while yelling, "Not yet!"
"You want to get cotton candy?" I ask as we stop in front of the stand. "Don't tell me you don't like cotton candy either," Foster demands. I laugh and reply, "I like it, but I also want to ride the roller coaster really bad." He smiles at me and shakes his head. "Well miss impatient, you're going to wait until I get my cotton candy and eat it," he tells me right before turning his attention towards the seller.
As we walk away with a blue cotton candy I realize we've never stopped holding hands, which I immediately let go and avoid his eye contact. "Do you want some?" Foster's words bring my attention back to him. "Well since it'll get us to ride sooner, than yes I will take some," I answer while taking a big handful. "Hey now! You didn't even want to get any and now you've taken half," Foster fusses. I look over at him and give my biggest smile, but he wasn't really mad because he's also wearing the same smile. "Just hurry up," I comment. "Yes princess," he teases. I roll my eyes and take a huge bite of the cotton candy.
"We're next, are you okay?" Foster asks me as we move up to the front of the line for the roller coaster. I nod my head, but in actuality my stomach is twisting from nerves. "No you're not," he tells me as if he could read my mind. I look up to him and find it to be filled with concern instead of his usual easy going smile. "I'll be right next to you the whole time and I promise to never let go of your hand," he adds while grabbing my hand into his. He gives it a little squeeze, then I hear us being called forward. As we wait for the rest of the seats to be filled I lean my head on his shoulder and scoot as close as I can be to him. Then we're off and I find myself holding my breath the whole time we're slowly going up the first hill.
I have the biggest smile on my face as I'm walking away from the ride. "So what do you think? You really didn't make a noise and the grip you had on my hand the whole time I thought it would fall off," Foster asks me while laughing at the end. I smile at him and all of a sudden wrap my arms around him while replying, "I LOVED IT! Can we do it again and again?" Foster looks surprised, but then hugs me back and answers, "I'm happy you loved it." I step back and walk towards the direction of the line to get back on, but realize Foster isn't next to me. I stop and look behind me. He's standing there smiling at me, it causes me to stop and stare as well because he looks so happy. Like genuinely happy. "Are you coming?" I finally ask. He nods his head and walks over to where I am, while linking my arm with his.
"Ok I'm done now," I tell Foster as we get off the roller coaster for the third time. He looks down at me and asks, "Oh really? You don't want to go on it a fourth time?" I playfully push him and reply, "Nope." We're still holding hands, but I don't really care anymore. Foster's one of my closest friends now and he makes me feel safe and happy. "What do you say about some friendly competition?" Foster asks me once we leave the crowded area around the roller coaster. "Yes, but you're going down," I inform him with a mischievous smile. I walk over to a ring toss booth and look over to Foster to give him a playful glare before starting. Not surprisingly I get every toss in, when Foster doesn't get any. I choose a bear with a bow tie and hand it over to Foster while telling him, "For you my darling." He scrunches up his eyebrows at me and asks, "You want me to hold it for you?" I shake my head no while trying to hold back my laughter. "Nope. I picked it out just for you, I mean look it's even wearing a bow tie and everyone knows bow ties are cool," I reply. Foster cracks up laughing and comments, "I can't believe you just Doctor Who'd this situation."
With two more stuffed animals later, which I won both, Foster stops walking and tells me, "Hear hold all these. I'm finally going to win some dignity and win a game." I laugh and say, "If you say so Foster." He stops and walks over to the pole where you have to slam down the heavy hammer as hard as you can. This makes me laugh even harder as I picture him picking the hammer up, but I stop once I watch him pick it up with ease. Then to my surprise he slams it down and the thing goes all the way up and rings the bell. Damn Foster. He walks over with the biggest bear I've seen, bigger than all the animals I won. Foster is wearing a huge smile while he hands me the stuffed animal saying, "For you my darling." I take it while handing him the other three and wrap my arms around the bear. "Thank you. No one has ever won me an animal," I tell him with sincerity. Foster smiles back at me and looks me in the eyes while commenting, "I'm glad I got to be your first."
"We have to take a picture before we leave Foster," I plead as we're getting ready to leave. He stops and takes out his phone, then turns the camera around to face us, but I step away and demand, "No I don't want a selfie. I want an actually photo of us with all the stuffed animals and everything. Here let's stop those two girls. Hey!" I call them over and ask if they could take a photo of us. I get close to Foster and feel him put his arm around my shoulder as the girl counts down, then I lean my head against him as she says three. Once Foster goes over to grab the phone she comments, "You guys are the cutest couple." I smile at her and say, "Oh we're just close friends." She blushes from embarrassment and corrects, "I'm sorry. Either way, you guys look happy." Then she walks away. I look over at Foster and can't read what he's thinking about from his facial expression. "Vera," he finally says. I nod my head for him to continue. "Today was one of the best days I've had in a while. Actually all of winter break has been pretty much amazing, because I've spent it with you. I'm so thankful I got to be here with you today, seeing you smile and laugh like your old self. Vera I'm happy. I'm so happy all thanks to you," he tells me while never leaving my gaze. I gasp from his confession. He means so much to me as a friend and I'm so happy to see that he feels the same way. I just realized something, he's made me happy too. As much as I miss Fallon every day, Foster has made each day worth smiling and laughing for. I might still love Fallon, but I can now say I'm starting to be happy again. "Foster I could say the same thing," I say right before giving him the warmest hug. I'm so lucky to have a friend like Foster.
