I was surrounded by darkness once again. But I liked this darkness. It was the darkness of home. Hell.
My bed was warm and welcoming. In the core of my being I could very strongly feel Hell’s life force burning within me. It was happy to have me home.
The journey back to the portal gate had been long and tiresome. It was also difficult because I needed to find some kind of food for myself as well. I hadn’t realized how long I had been on Earth for this time. I needed the small amount of food to sustain me. Thankfully that need disappeared as soon as I entered my dark kingdom.
After my father had taken Asmodeus and I out of the Human’s palace, he dropped me off in Burnham wood, right at the Kern River when I had first noticed the Hunters on the day I had been captured. I clenched my eyes shut as I remembered…
My senses came back to me tenfold for a few moments as I tumbled to the ground, my legs unable to hold me up any longer. In a quick glance I instantly recognized my surroundings. I was shocked. Why would my father stop here?
Through my gasps, I turned to look at him and Asmodeus who stood above me to my left, “What are we doing here? This is still a four-day journey away from Hell’s Gate!”
Puffing out his chest, he stared down at me with a hard, emotionless look. He didn’t speak for a few moments. When I opened my mouth to say something, he looked around at our surroundings and cut me off, “More like a seven day journey for you, Victoria. Given your current state of health and strength…”
I narrowed my eyes and looked between him and Asmodeus. So he was just going to leave us here?
“Are you mad?” I forced myself to stand up, my breathing back to normal and my temper more than a bit flared, “We could be home in a few moments time. Why leave us here to fend for ourselves? Asmodeus, say something, this is so unfair to us!”
“Asmodeus will not be joining you on your journey home,” my father quickly interjected.
My mouth dropped open in astonishment. I was beyond shocked; I didn’t know what to say. Was he serious?
“Think of this as a way to build up your strength.”
I glared daggers in his direction and put my hands on my hips, “I have been. Every day I trained with the Hunters. I can fight, I have the strength!”
He shrugged, “In body, perhaps. But not with your true self…”
He looked at Asmodeus and gave him a little nod, which he returned with the bow of his head.
Asmodeus looked at me and I could see in his eyes that he wished to get closer to me, to give me some kind of comfort, but he didn’t dare to do it in front of my father, “Safe travels, Victoria. I will welcome you back at the portal…” And just like that, his murky fog surrounded him and he faded away to return to Hell the quick way.
“This is ridiculous…” I stated in my emotionless tone that I so wonderfully inherited from my loving father...
Looking at me now, there was some kind of emotion in his eyes. But I couldn’t name it.
“NO!” he bellowed so loud that some nearby birds flew away in a panicked flurry, “You are being ridiculous. I am trying to help you, daughter.” I couldn’t help but flinch at his tone at the word daughter. It was like he spat it out of his mouth like it was poison.
“How is this helping? Is this my punishment? I know I dishonored your name by being captured. I can’t imagine how that must have hurt your name. But I fought them everyday. I always tried to escape and come home. You must surely know that!”
