I'd like to dedicate this novel to my very closest friends: Jaysen, Patrick, and John and to my freakish alike long lost sister and partner in crime Janis.
Finally, I would like to dedicate this book to my father who was my daily guide and rock. I'll miss you dad.
The Very Idea
While this may not be the most thought provoking and moving opening to a book you as a reader might be reading this year, it does provide the opportunity for me to lay down the basis behind this book from a very real perspective.
Now, more than likely, you've picked up this book because of the title or maybe a word in the title that struck a chord with you. Whether it was curiosity or the search for knowledge, here you are.
The reason behind this informal opening is very simple: there are far too many "formal" books on Asperger's Syndrome.
What I mean by this is that in my various readings about Asperger's Syndrome, or AS, has been more like some disembodied voice giving a lecture about what it is rather than really showing what AS is.
That's what this book is going to be about.
I will give a brief summary about what Asperger is but beyond that I will be delving into a "behind the scenes" look at AS.
Each chapter will give a glimpse into the mindset of a person, namely myself, with AS in various everyday situations. While I will be giving specific examples and situations the way in which each chapter is laid out will be another way to show what AS is like. So, things might seem out of order, weirdly stated, or come out of the blue. But that's nearly an accurate definition of an Aspie without all the technical words.
Now, I would like to take a moment to point out that I'm not a doctor and this is not a book about diagnosing Asperger. But what I am is a woman who was diagnosed with AS a few years ago and has been learning to cope with something that has no known cure.
I would also like to point out that while this is a closer look at AS it is by no means a "blanket synopsis" of what its like to have it. This is just a way to offer insight into how the world can be viewed by a person diagnosed with Asperger.
Within this book, I will be using some of my own personal experiences that I can remember in which AS played a role in.
I have one goal for this book. I want to spread the knowledge about AS to give others a broader understanding of how people with this diagnosis think, feel, and function if only in a very general sense. This is not a one size fits all deal but if one more person understands and sees the potential in someone with AS then I can count this book as a success. Or if you, dear reader, have been diagnosed, then I can hope you will see and understand that there are others out there that understand and that you are not alone.
So without further ado, let's jump into the introduction to my world of Asperger.
