I can understand why
Taylor Swift was known for
writing songs on
people she knew
For now
I do it too
But people look and ask
Why?

Why would you be so petty?

Perhaps her choice of people
is what some see as
petty
or a
personal attack

But.

Those people
touched her life
changed it in ways
we do not understand
for we cannot know
unless we are her

But I digress
for the reason I too write
about people I know
is because they inspire me
They walked
or danced
or sang
or performed
their way into my life
and haven't left
They made me grow
and change
and become

So the question becomes
not why would I write about them
but
Why would I not?

For I am a writer and a poet
words are an
inedible part of my soul
so why would I not use them
to pay tribute to
and to deeply utterly thank
people who have made
the chapters in my life
as indescribably
and eloquently
wonderful
as it is?

This is the counterpart to Storybook Fool. After writing Storybook Fool I spent the next day or two agonising over it, because I didn't want to leave it on such a down note. I realised that, after all, I usually am inspired by the people that made positive influences in my life - because I choose to celebrate the laughter and expanding of my world, rather than those that have destroyed parts of it.

And so, to balance out Storybook Fool, I wrote Storybook Heroes, dedicated to all the people who came in before and after the events of Storybook Fool and opened my world a little bit more.

As Storybook Fool was written about a certain person in my life who I once naively called friend, so too is Storybook Heroes written for the myriad of people who wandered into my life by chance or design. Whether they stayed or moved on isn't relevant - but the people that often inspire me to create poetry are those who have changed my mind and my world, who have influenced it with joy and laughter and knowledge. For all of those people - teachers, family, friends, and more - this is for you.
