Sans and Frisk walked together, yet slightly far apart. They were distracted by the other, each one throwing a glance their friends way making sure they were still okay, before continuing down the path to the Ruins.

Sans had already texted all of the monsters who were closely linked to the king to round up all of the monsters in their area. They were just headed to check on progress. Toriel would clear the ruins, Papyrus would clear Snowdin, Alphys and Mettaton would take Hotland and the Core. Hopefully everyone would make it past or into the Core before Chara woke up.

As soon as they were at the large purple door, Frisk shoved it open, rushing into the ruins and running through the long halls. She felt bad for leaving Sans behind, but she knew he could take care of himself, she had to get to Toriel, the first monster to ever show her kindness. She took the stairs two at a time and soon found herself in her goat mom's living room. It was empty, a book discarded on the floor, probably in Toriel's haste to tell the others. Everything looked fine, Frisk wasn't sure if they should go any further in. Sans suddenly appeared behind her, placing a hand on her shoulder. She was startled for a second,  and whipped around, her fist clenched. She swung, and Sans quickly caught it.

"Woah there kiddo...it's just me." He hugged her tightly, quietly apologizing for scaring her. She relaxed, wrapping her arms around his waist. He pushed his teeth against her lips, giving her a reassuring kiss before heading further into the ruins, Frisk close behind him. Halfway through they ran into Toriel and a herd of other monsters who made their home in the ruins.

"FRISK!" Toriel shouted as she pulled the human into a tight embrace. "I  am so glad you are alright!"

Frisk hugged the large goat monster back. "Hey mom.. sorry but.. we need to get to checking on the other areas. You'll be alright if we head over to Snowdin?"

"We'll be okay. I will see you both at the castle." She then pulled Sans close and whispered something to him. Frisk didn't hear, but Sans heard her words loud and clear. "Remember your promise, Sans." With that Toriel waved to them as Sans took Frisk's hand and teleported to Snowdin.

He held onto her tightly as soon as they were there. She gripped his shoulders, trying to get rid of the dizziness that always came after teleportation. She gave him a quick look, one that showed so much fear Sans wasn't sure what to do, before pushing away. He reached for her but she was too far away. He struggled to catch up and when he did he found her with tears streaming down her faces, creating little paths on her cheeks.

"Frisk... what's wrong?"

She gave him an odd look and then turned away. "I don't  want to reset. I don't  want to lose you. I don't  want them to lose their memories again Sans!" She sobbed, collapsing to her knees in the fresh snow. "And if I can't  kill her what am I supposed to do!? I'D  HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE!!" She covered her face, now bright red, and sat there in the snow, refusing to look at him.

"I.. I understand Frisk." He took a few cautious  steps toward her before picking her up and holding her close. "I know you can't be strong all the time butter cup. I know it's hard." Her sobs grew a bit quieter but still persisted. "Shhh sh sh" he whispered. "Now come on kid," he set her down and wiped the tears from her eyes. "we have to go check the other areas and get to the castle."

The two of them checked through Snowdin, Hotland, and the Core very efficiently. They didn't find any stray monsters. Sans grabbed Frisk's hand before heading in the direction of the castle. There was a sudden noise behind them, Frisk turned quickly. A quiet laughing filled the air, the source unknown.

"Who's there?" She said. The laughing only grew louder, more crazed. "SHOW YOURSELF!" She yelled. The laughing ceased suddenly.

"Why, Frisk, don't  you recognize your best friend!?" A voice asked, it was a familiar voice. Flowey giggled as he emerged from a hole in the ground.

"Leave." Sans growled, stepping in front of his beloved human.

"Oh Sans!" The flower chuckled. "You really are an idiot! Don't  you realize it's too late? Chara is rising. I supposed I can move, although it won't  do you any good any way!" The flower laughed again as he sunk into the ground.

Sans and Frisk stood there for a moment, not realizing that during the commotion Frisk had latched onto Sans's arm. He looked down at her hand and smiled. "You're okay Frisk. I'm  here." He kissed her softly and walked forward, glancing around to be sure they were alone this time.

When they reached the castle Asgore was there to greet them. He took Frisk into a large hug, lifting her off the ground. "You can do this Frisk! Stay determined." He chuckled and set  her down.

"Th-Thank you Asgore." She smiled up at him. "We'd  better get inside, make sure the doors are locked. There's no other monsters on our side out there." Sans noticed she looked disappointed.

"Of course Frisk. You should both get some rest, please feel free to use Toriel's former quarters to rest your heads." The king stated grimly, it was time to get serious.

"Thank you, your Highness." Sans said, putting his hand on the small of Frisk's back and leading her inside. She was exhausted. They went to the queen's old bedroom and shut the door behind them. Sans locked it, not wanting anyone to bother Frisk.

"I-I know it's stupid," She muttered as she sat on the bed, "but I wish we could've saved Flowey, despite everything he has done to me..." She stopped talking and looked at Sans, holding her arms out. He walked over, pulled her into his lap, and hugged her tightly, his hand softly stroking her hair.

"You need rest Frisk. Come on, lay down. " and she did, falling asleep almost immediately. A smile crept across the skeleton's face. He laid down next to her and pulled her close, planting a kiss on her head, he also drifted off to sleep.
