And Burning

Kylee sat at her desk, filling in reports and doing ordinary stuff until she was called in for surgery or something. Her eyes were plastered on the files of cases she’d worked. She paused, a small smile creeping onto her face. The case of the dog toothed turtle; some unlucky pet turtle had gotten out of its cage and the family dog nearly killed it. Kylee and some of the nurses had worked all day to save it, luckily the thing lived. The case had helped Kylee a lot, she’d saved one broken turtle to make up for another…Damn, this has been a bad week. That damned ghost has entered almost every thought this week….I’ll just push it aside for the moment. I’ll go talk to Donny after work, after I know what Becca wanted to tell me. Talking to Donny helps. She thought, smiling sadly. It was almost the end of the day so she started packing up her papers and books and references when someone came into her office.

It was Cain, a nurse and a really friendly guy. He was a nice man, soft golden brown hair that fell into his face, silver/green eyes that made you melt if you fell for him, nice tan skin, and good smile. He walked up to her desk and placed his hands on the edge and leaned. “Hellooo doctor” He laughed. Kylee put her papers in her briefcase and looked at him. “Hiya Cain. What do ya need?” She said in one slow breath. Right now her breath smelled of strong mint, and his on cinnamon. “I need a reason ta visit?”

“That would be preferable at the precise moment.” She said standing up, a few book held to her ample chest and briefcase in hand. Cain stood strait, hands in his pockets, and smiled. “How about I wanted ta ask ya somethin’?” He laughed, showing white teeth and his eyes gleaming. Kylee rolled her eyes and headed toward the door. “Then spit it out then, I’ve got a bossy sister waiting to tell me something”

“I was wondering if ya wanted ta go to dinner with me tonight” He said sweetly, looking at the floor slightly. Kylee stopped up short with her hand on the door knob. She sighed, not facing him. Cain looked at her hair that ran to her mid back and blushed slightly.

“I’m sorry Cain, but no thank you.”

“Why not?” He asked good naturedly, his smile dropping to a curious frown, “You used to go on dates with your co workers and other guys all the time, accepting them almost without a second thought”

Kylee smiled a little, chuckling to herself and still not facing him. “Oh, I dunno. I guess cuz I fell in love and got hurt. I’m just not ready to start dating again.” It was now she turned to face him, smiling apologetically, “I really am sorry Cain”

“T’s okay. I really like ya, so I can wait till your ready to date again.”

“Then you’ll be waiting for a long time my friend.”

“I don’t care. You’re worth waiting for.”

“Sorry Cain.”

The two were back to back and Kylee left her office. She hated turning down sweet guys like Cain, but she still wasn’t over Raph, not just yet. She walked down the pavement, heading towards Becca’s studio. Deep in thought, she didn’t notice much. Her body turned instinctively at corners and stopped at lights but Kylee herself was in a complete other world. Becca was waiting for her on the curb, waving her down. “Ya know that if you’d listened to me earlier, you’d be more eager to get home.” She said, softly bashing Kylee in the head. “Mmhm” Kylee murmured. Becca saw Kylee’s eyes drooping and at first thought Kylee had just had a long day and was tired. That opinion changed though when they waved down a taxi. Becca tried to get Kylee’s attention by chattering her ear off, but it wasn’t working. Kylee was just staring out the window somewhat sadly. Becca waved a hand in her face, making Kylee blink and look at her. “Yeah?”

“What’s with you Ky? Yer acting funny”

“Cain asked me to dinner earlier”

“Cain? Who’s Cain?” Becca leaned over, searching Kylee’s face for either endearment or sorrow

“A nurse at work” Kylee said vaguely, still looking at the window

“Oh…did you say yes? You going on a date?”

Kylee shook her head and looked at Becca with thoughs eyes that said everything to Becca. It had been a bad week on thinking about Raph, she had to turn a sweet guy down because she still wasn’t over loving Raph even after five years of him being ‘dead’. Becca was both relived and sad. “Kylee, if you still feel like that, guess what happened last night”

“If it’s anything about a body I don’t wanna hear it” Kylee said grumpily her facial expression changing from sad to irritated. Becca laughed and shook her head. “Nope, guess again sissy”

“Becca, honestly! I’m not in the mood to play around, just freaking tell me!”

“Well someone’s crotchety.”

“If you don’t tell me I’m gonna strangle you ta death and hide your body to where know on can find it.”

“Fine then…hey you hear that hissing?”

“yeah, weird?...oh, gone now…TELL  ME WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED LAST NIGHT!”

“Quit being crotchety or I won’t tell you.”

“Becca you’re getting on my nerves now”

“Kylee-tone the crotchetiness down”

“I hate you”

“Kay, good. Now guess who I met in the sewer?”

“Becca!”

Becca leaned over, motioning for Kylee to lean closer. Kylee rolled her eyes and leaned in. Becca began whispering into Kylee’s ear. Kylee’s heart stopped for more than two seconds, Becca smiled and nodded slowly

“WHAT!”

Suddenly the cab started swerving and the girls looked up at the driver. His hands were moving this way and that, making the cab twist and turn wildly.  The girls looked outside, there was no major crash it was just him! And they were heading into heavy traffic! They acted fast, not knowing if the guy was drunk or if he were having some sort of mental issue. Kylee leapt up to the front, yanked the guy back and pushed him toward Becca, taking the wheel. “HOLD HIM DOWN!” She ordered, Becca did as told. Kylee discovered the break had gone out, crud. She looked for the closest way to stop the car from killing people. She spotted a light post with not too many people around it and turned. “HOLD ON!!!”

                                                            ---------------------------------------------

Raph was sitting on his old couch, napping soundly until he heard a sudden unsettling splashing. He rose and walked to his door. Donny rushed past him, water splashing all over the place.

“Yo Don, where’s the fire man?”

“Can’t talk Raph! Kylee and Becca got into a wreck and are in the hospital! I gotta get ta Mikey!!” Donny said, not really realizing it was Raph, and not really caring at the moment, still running toward Mikey’s place. “A WHAT!? WHERE ARE THEY?!” Raph bellowed, running after his younger brother.

“Yeah, some explosion with a cab and a lamppost! Plus glass was all over them!”

“Dammit! Right when I get home! IT HAD TA BE RIGHT WHEN I GOT HOME WHEN EVERONE DECIDES TA BE DANGA MAGNETS!”

“I guess you’re lucky like that!”

“MIKEY!” The brothers called together. Going into Mikeys house, they found him putting Lena down and the little girl shedding off a tiny backpack. “Daddy, who’s that turtle by Uncle Donny?” She pulled on her father’s shirt (Mikey was in human form). “Guys? What’s wrong? What happened?”

“It ain’t good lil brotha” Raph panted

“The girls got in a wreck.” Donny added then looking at Raph in disbelief. “Raph?...you’re alive? AND HOME?!”

“Hiya Don-can we catch up WHEN THE GIRLS ARE OKAY!?!”
