"Hello?" Steve asked and stopped at the doctors voice. "Sir Rogers - It's about your friend James Barnes."

"What - what is it?" Steve asked, his body shivering and his voice thin, close to breaking between the quiet words he said. Sam was concerned because of Steves face that was covered in pure panic and fear.

Sam stood next to the Captain for a few minutes of talking and saw Steves eyebrows knitting together in confusion. Sometimes Steve nodded or sighed and shook his head in concern. Sam prayed, that Bucky hadn't died. He knew that it would destroy Steves world.

After a while, Steve said goodbye to the strange guy on the phone and looked at Sam. His expression was not giving anything away about the talk he just had. His eyes didn't shine in the ocean blue like they always did. No, they were empty.

Sam wanted to ask who it was and what he said, but he just kept his mouth shut. Sam followed Steve back to the hospital.

On their way, Sam fought the urge to ask Steve and held himself back from saying anything because he knew that Steve hated to talk about his feelings or even worse - his problems. Steve was that kind of person that kept everything to himself.

Steve was that kind of person that didn't want to 'bother' others with his life. He thought so little of himself and tried to face all the dangers and fights on his own. Steve always tried to get the others out of harms way first and then his own. He was tuff, he was corageous and never cared about the scathing conditios of himself. He only cared about others. But the most, he cared about Bucky.

After a while, Steve noticed Sam being unnormally quiet. "It was the doctor." Steve finally said and slowed down. "He told me about Bucky.. the surgery helped him and he's sort of... sleeping now." Steve said and sighed heavily.

"When I asked him what that meant he said that he's in coma... and they don't know if he's going to make it or if he's going to..." Steve couldn't say it. His heart didn't let him say the words Steve feared the most. "Die?" Sam said and Steve nodded with a bitter expression.

"It's just... I ... I can't live without him Sam.." Steve whispered and tried to keep his voice steady and cool which resulted in complete failure. "I lost him once and now I'll lose him again because I AM and never WAS able to protect him." Steves eyes filled with tears and his lungs heart felt like it was about to burst into millions of pieces.

"Steve, don't say that. There's still hope that he's going to make it-" Sam said but was cut off by Steves loud voice. "There's no doubt that he's going to make it or not! He will survive, he has to! Bucky will come back to me and I will tell him how much I need him because there is NO WAY, no way Sam that I'll continue life without him." Steve panted and nearly broke down.

"I know Steve." Sam said and put an arm around Steves back.

He felt Steves chest heaving frantically although Steve didn't look like he was in pain. "Are you - hurt?" Sam asked confused and stopped. "N-NO!" Steve practically shouted and kept on walking.

"That's a lie!" Sam hissed and pulled up Steves shirt before the other man could get away. There was a big wound under the soft material. It was really deep and swollen. The rest of Steves chest was blue and red, even one of his ribs was peeking out and very visible through the thin skin.

"Steve, what the hell!?" Sam whispered in shock. "Why wouldn't you tell anyone you idiot?" Sam screamed, still holding up his shirt. "Sam - let it go-" "NO!" Sam screamed. "I said LET IT GO!" Steve shouted back. "Are you out of your mind?" Sam said and grabbed Steves shoulders. "You should get some help! This looks serious!" Sam said in a highly concerned voice.
