-Skylar's POV-
"Come on Skylar" a soft voice rings out through the small apartment I preoccupied and I practically jump out of the bed. I'm always jumpy, it sucks really.
"What the hell Natalie" I scream back looking at the time on my phone next to me. 7 am. Great.
I walk out my room and see Natalie making coffee in a silk nightgown barley awake. "Damn grandma, you're hot" I joke grabbing a mug out of the cabinet and pouring myself a cup while she rolls her eyes at my comment. "By the way, the next time you want to go to a New Year's Eve party then invite me as your plus one to ice skate at a baseball field the next morning leave me out of it" I scold trying to wake up.
Turns out my college roommate knew someone on the Blackhawks team and she wanted me to come to the family skate with her. Naturally I wouldn't be this unhappy as I love adventures such as this one. Sadly three hours of sleep isn't good for a growing brain.
"You didn't even drink last night, you'll be fine. Plus... you looooove the Blackhawks, don't act like you don't" she shoots back. I rinse out my cup and put it up to dry next to hers.
"I loooove hockey. I'm a fan of the sport, the Blackhawks just so happen to be my team. I love Ovechkin and Malkin too" I try convincing her.
She rolls her eyes and disappears into her room mumbling about how I always like the Russians. "At least tell me what to wear" I yell her direction.
"Something warm" sounds faintly from her room. Wow... if only I thought of that.
We pull up to Wrigley field and walk into the building. I had to admit this was pretty awesome. The 2009 winter classic is being played here in Chicago and the scene was breathtaking. I look down at my dark skinny jeans and simple red Blackhawks sweater. My light brown hair is flowing out from under my beanie as my glove covered hands fiddles with the hat. The Windy City is just as expected... Windy.
"Who exactly do you know" I ask stuffing my phone in my pocket and jogging to catch up with Natalie.
"The coach is my uncle. When he found out I was studying in Chicago he invited me here and said to bring a friend" she shrugs.
"That's actually really cool" I say walking onto the field.
I stop and take it all in. Black and red filled the field as people circled the ice.
"Amazing" I sigh looking around.
"It is... isn't it" says a voice that was defiantly not Natalie's. Nope, she left me behind and was halfway to the ice already.
I look up to the direction of the voice and am meet with the prettiest pair of crystal blue eyes I have ever seen. He smiles down at me and I stand frozen. He was super attractive, that's for sure. A nice smile is sent my way and I try my best to meet it.
"I don't think I've ever seen you around here before, who's family are you with" he asks. I knew he was a player but I didn't know which one for sure. He looked young though.
"Not family, I'm here with my college roommate who is Joel's niece" I say quietly. He nods and continues to stare at me. His eyes scanned every inch of my body and I start feeling uncomfortable then decide it's time to leave.
"Well I have to go find my friend" I trail off pointing to the rink.
"Wait.. I uh... I never got your name" he stutters. He seemed nervous and it was kind of cute. I give him a slight smile, partially because I was happy he stopped staring at me.
"Skylar" I respond before turning on my heel and walking away.
I find Natalie talking to a tall boy with her skates on already. "Hey Nat, next time you forget about me I'm going to sneak little bells into your pocket so I can find you again" I say lacing my skates next to her. She snorts at my joke and quickly covers her mouth embarrassed she made such a unattractive sound in front of a guy. "Hot" I laugh nudging her side and standing up. I notice the tall guy was pretty attractive and raise my eyebrow at Natalie. I look between the two and get the message.
"I'm going to go warm up a few laps, you two return to... whatever it is you were doing" I say pointing between the two. They look at each other and I decide to hit the ice.
After a few laps I slow down and decide to take in my surroundings once again. I just couldn't believe I was at Wrigley field skating with professional hockey players. I was snapped out of my thoughts when a someone flies into my legs with great force sweeping my feet out from under me.
"Oh my god I am so sorry. You would think after a few years this whole skating thing will get easier" the woman laughs.
"I guess some people got it and others just like to watch, like me" I say helping her off the ice and back to her feet.
"I'm so sorry" she apologizes again and looks up to me with a growing puzzling look. "I've never seen you before" she says and I laugh.
"Yeah, I'm new here. My roommate is Joel's niece. I'm Skyler" I say shaking her hand.
"Ohhhhhh so you're Skylar" she says nodding her head. How in the world would she know about me? "I'm sorry, I'm being rude. I'm Abby" she says with a smile.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Abby" I say with a smile.
I skate around with her talking about how cool this was what it means to a city like this one. We hit it off and I notice Natalie is still hanging all over the boy. "Patrick is infatuated with you, you know" she mentions as we skate around.
Patrick??? Oh that must be the guy I was talking to earlier. He looked different without him in a bunch of pads and a helmet.
"He was talking about me" I ask a bit confused.
"He wouldn't stop. And it's only been like half a hour" she laughs. I didn't know what to think to be honest.
"That's rally sweet" is all I say.
I excuse myself and get off to take a break and watch people skate around. My feet were killing but I liked that I made a friend that wasn't Natalie and experienced something like this. I see Patrick skate by a few times trying to catch my glance. He was cute but not my type. I was so deep in thought that I didn't realize he had come to sit next to me.
"Listen, I'm sorry for being creepy earlier" he says rubbing the back of his neck.
"It wasn't creepy. Wasn't comfortable... but not creepy" I smile. I didn't want him to feel bad, he didn't do anything wrong after all.
"So, Skylar, tell me about yourself" he asks and I start to relax. He didn't seem like this was forced any more letting me enjoy it.
"Okay then. I'm 20, I love any and all animals, and I want to be a sports broadcaster" I say. "What about you? Who is Patrick Kane" I ask.
"I honestly thought you didn't know who I was" he laughs. I laugh awkwardly and fiddle with my thumbs.
"Honestly I didn't. I figured it out when I was with Abby" I reply.
"Okay. Well I'm also 20, I've always wanted to be a hockey player and I won rookie of the year last season" he says.
"That's you? That's all you got" I ask. He looks shocked by my response but continues.
"Um... I've always wanted a German Sheppard, I love all types of music, and I love my family more than hockey" he reiterates. I smile happy to hear he's not some robot athlete.
"That's better" I respond as we continue to talk.
Hours past and it feels like I've known him forever. He talks about his home, all his sisters, the pressure, his favorite memories and I listen contently. I was more than interested always asking questions and laughed at his terrible jokes. It was cute he was trying so hard to talk to me when he could be out on the ice with his friends. His life seemed so simple yet beautiful and I was entranced.
"You're a really cool girl" he says nudging me.
"Skylar, time to go" Natalie calls walking past me and I let out a grunt.
"That's my cue, it was nice meeting you Patrick. I had a great time" I say getting up and placing my skates on the seat.
"Wait... when can I see you again" he calls out.
"Whenever fate should have it" I reply.
