They say waking up mad is bad for you, but I was more than mad, I was seething. I know Skylar has seen the headlines around here the past few days and is acting like it doesn't bother her, at least a lot better than I was. They weren't saying bad things about her per say, but they have their facts all wrong and have no idea what our relationship is based on. Some thought she was going to make my play worse. I wasn't trying to fix her and I wasn't dating her because I felt bad for her. People were reading this all wrong and I was extremely upset. I scroll through the articles mumbling to myself and Skylar appears a little while later.
"You know, reading isn't good for you" she says pouring a cup of coffee.
"You read all the time" I shoot back clicking away at my laptop.
"I didn't say reading was bad for me... I said it was bad for you" she laughs causing me to roll my eyes. "Seriously though, you shouldn't read those if you're going to let them get to you" she says rubbing my shoulders.
"How do you not read this shit" I ask getting more upset at the assumptions being made.
"I read them, but I don't read into them" she says softly.
"But how" I ask confused to how she's so okay with this.
"Because I've seen it all before. I was always the center of this shit because I'm the only girl who made it. They don't know that Jake is the only reason that holds true or how he tried warning people about dad. I learned that they don't want to hear that stuff. They want me to be the victim because I'm pretty and you to be the hero because you're a superstar. They want a story and they're going to get one whether they make it up or actually make a effort to find the truth. I don't care what they say about me or us because they haven't seen what I've seen or loved how I loved. I can't expect them to understand" she say climbing in my lap.
"But they're so wrong" I try.
"The thing about this is the truth isn't that pretty either. Eventually they'll see what we have is real and that I'm not some weak and innocent girl and accept what we are to each other, whether they like it or not. Until then let the facts come to light and that will show them the way to the truth" she assures me.
"How can you be so okay with this? Like you just made this seem like a good thing" I laugh dryly. I'm still amazed at how she handles everything.
"You don't know true strength until your only option is to be strong" she whispers.
"I'm so sorry all this happened to you. I hate that it did" I say rubbing her back.
"I don't mind following that path because it lead me to you" she says with a smile.
"We're going to show people just how great you are, and that your father caused this" I promise. I feel her tense up and I realize I should not have brought up her dad. "I'm sorry" I say before kissing her neck.
"It's okay" she says quietly and relaxes. I continue to kiss up her neck and I feel her shiver. "What do you think you're doing" she asks playfully.
"Showing you how much I love you" I reply tugging at her shirt.
"I like the sound of that" she says and it doesn't take much for her to elevate things further.
We had a game later today and Skylar was taking a nap on the couch. She's been exhausted because she isn't used to the travel yet so she enjoyed her naps. Not too long after she falls asleep I hear my phone buzz on the island and Jakes id pops up.
"Hey man" I say answering the phone.
"Hey, what's up" he asks.
"Nothing much. Skylar is asleep on the couch and I was watching game tape" I answer.
"Sweet. Listen... we need to talk" he says and I pause the tape. This can't be good.
"I'm listening" I say, my hands suddenly a little sweaty.
"Since the word of you two got out and people have been wanting to know everything about Skylar, literally everything. Some things I didn't even know. Anyway, some not so good things have gotten out. I expected this but there is one problem. Since so many people know about her and her past now, they want to re-open the case and get our dad in jail. Suddenly they realize he's a bad guy or whatever, but they want him locked up. The response to Skylar has been great so far. But people see that she said her dad was at the scene of both deaths and she said he did it, they want to believe her now. I've been contacted about bringing Bri and Mom up and running more tests but it won't work unless Skylar testifies, dad won't like that and if he's found innocent I don't think she'll be able to stay there. I know this is a lot to take in but I wanted to warn you. A lot of shit is about to hit the fan and I want you prepared" he says.
I take the time to soak up all this information for a second. Everything Skylar didn't want to happen is happening and it's because she's with me. I knew this would happen.
"Do we need to find a lawyer" I ask trying to prepare myself.
"Funny you say that, because I'm actually a lawyer. A pretty damn good one too" he says with a laugh.
"Okay, now what" I ask not sure what to do.
"I'll be over to smooth things out and explain more later this week. All I want is for you to keep your eyes on Skylar. Make sure she's safe and happy" he say.
"I can do that. Thanks for the heads up. I'll see you soon" I conclude before hanging up. I throw my face in my hands and let out a groan. This, is going to be a long season.
