Sheep. A word I knew very well. Every day, my job was to herd, feed, and water the sheep. Along with keeping them safe. I'm a Shepard, nothing more than a common farm girl living under the rule of the Bejeweled. Bejeweled was just another name for the richer or higher ranked people of my village. Unlike other places, we have our own unique way of governing; the top 20 richest people make the laws of the village. Long ago when this was put into place, it seemed like a good idea, it was simple. But, many years have past now and there have been many problems found. The village has many ghost towns along the perimeter of the town. Many citizens are overtaxed or homeless. Somewhere in the timeline of the fall of this once-great kingdom, my adopted sister and I were born. Raised by our Pa, we learned much of the history of our home.

Yeah, like I would call this my "home". I thought bitterly as I remembered Pa's last words before being dragged off to prison by guards, "I'm sorry for bringing you innocent souls into this cruel, unforgiving place. This is not your home! Survive! Go to and chase your destiny!!"

"Sentrayah! Come on focus, your wasting the water!" My sister, Mau, shouted looking over her shoulder. As rude as it was, she was right. I needed to focus. Words usually don't get to me easily, but those words have bothered me for the past five years. Even now that I'm 15 the words of my grandfather still confuse and trouble me just as they did as the guards took away the last of my family. But I couldn't let that keep me from doing my work. Raising sheep was the only thing I was good for, and I couldn't afford to become an outcast.

I shook off the thought and moved on to the next sheep pen's water tank. Mau worked not far from me, herding the strangling sheep into their pens. "This is so hard!" She whined when another one of the sheep stopped moving to nibble on small blades of grass. I fought back a smile as I watched her struggle to get the sheep moving again.

"You know that never works." I said, unable to keep from smiling when she slipped and covered herself with dirt. Two clicking noises was all it took to make it start walking again. I let the sheep return to its pen and have the fresh water I had given it. Mau gave me one of her legendary angry scoffs and started tapping her foot as if she were waiting for a paycheck. "What?" I asked. But, all Mau did was throw her hands up in the air as if it were obvious. Great now I'll have to finish the chores my self. I thought watching her storm off.
