"Don't tell me you're awake again, young lady." The mother's voice startled the girl. In a blizzard of fast movements, the girl slammed the book shut and pushed it as hard as she could before leaping off the floor and into bed. Before her mother could see her up and about, she feigned sleep.

The book had slid far in the no man's land under the bed. It would take a crazy long arm to reach it, or maybe a broom. It was lost for now.

"Thank goodness." Mother exhaled in relief after flicking on the light to the girl's room. She shut the light back off and turned to leave. For whatever reason, a path of tears led straight to her room.
