Seven – “Little Tease” – Part II

Noelle

If I’m being completely honest with myself, I’m not afraid to admit it. Slapping Adam, again? I was completely overjoyed – I think. The way Adam made me feel . . . if I was being completely truthful, it terrified me.

He was able to toy with my emotions, and I don’t think he was aware that he was doing so. Adam would make me feel so warm and safe one second, and then the next, he’d make me furious.

Adam didn’t even have to put much effort into making me angry; just snarky little comments, designed to crawl under my skin and annoy me to the point of anger. Like an irritating little bloodsucking tick, just provoking you, until suddenly . . . slap! Bye, bye, little tick!

I knew that there was one thing I could openly admit, fully aware that it was true:

Adam Peterson = a big flirt and an inconsiderate tease!

“Noelle? Hello, earth to Noelle?” Snapping out of my thoughts, my vision was filled with a large hand - Adam’s, unfortunately, - waving in front of my face. I contemplated biting the hand, but, thinking he might get the wrong idea (if you know what I mean!), I decided against it, settling for a death glare, aimed towards the hand, of course.

“Get your hands off of me right this instant, please.” I told Adam quietly. He was no fool; he’d recognise the threatening tone of my voice. For a few brief seconds, I wondered why on Earth I had allowed him to pull me onto his lap in the first place. Then, remembering that warm, tingly feeling of being loved, my thoughts shut themselves up.

As I had suspected, Adam untangled his hands from my waist pretty quickly, allowing me to jump from his lap. Shaking off the pang of emptiness that now filled my stomach; I managed to squeeze myself next to Lucie on the couch.

The awkward silence that followed was utterly embarrassing. Keeping myself busy by playing with my hands, I decided that someone else should break the silence, and not me. Why? Because my “ice-breakers” turned out completely stupid, making the tension in the room increase a notch instead of shattering.

Lucie and Jake both laughed nervously, breaking the awkward silence that had arisen easily with their infectious laughs. The room was soon filled with our light, friendly laughter. I put a hand over my mouth to stop the avalanche of giggles that had overcome me.

“Well, anyway, guys, moving on – Jake and I have decided to give a relationship a go! We both think this feels so right, so promising. So, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of each other!” Lucie cheerfully announced.

Adam cleared his throat. “Well, it was nice meeting you, Lucie, but now that’s settled, I think I shall go home and break the big news to my mom. And I gotta eat, since she didn’t offer me anything,” - a pointed look in my direction, - “Noelle, shall we appoint perhaps a week from now, as moving-in-day?”

A heavy sigh erupted, escaping my lips before I could think to mask the obnoxious noise. “Fine, you can move in next weekend, I guess. Pass me your cell phone and I’ll give you my number,” I offered begrudgingly. After digging around in the pockets of his jeans, Adam tossed me a shiny black phone. I inserted my number and tossed it back, Adam catching it neatly.

He caught my hand and started to drag me out the room, his grip firm. “Don’t worry; I’m just borrowing Noelle for a few minutes, Lucie. You can grill her for details when I’m gone. Good luck on surviving these two crazy girls, Jakey-boy!”

Jake chuckled at his friend. “Thanks, man. I know I’ll need all the luck I can get.” Lucie pushed him playfully, and he sealed the affectionate teasing with a kiss. They are just too darn cute for their own good! I thought dotingly.

When we reached the hall, Adam pulled me to a halt, drawing his face closer to mine, allowing me to feel his cool, minty breath on my cheek. He leant in for a kiss, and I sealed it lightly, only allowing the faintest brush of our lips.

Oh, come on! Who, in their right mind, would pass up an opportunity for some lip-action with a guy like Adam, whether you hate them or not? I think I shall present him with the label ‘Irritatingly Lovable’.

“See you later, Alligator,” Adam told me, smirking as he let himself out of my – our – house.

“In a while, Crocodile,” I whispered back, though the door had already clicked shut. Smiling, happy with myself, I made my way back through to Jake and Lucie.

“Okay, spill the details girl! What is it with you two? Like, seriously! One minute you’re all off, the next you’re all into each other! Is it one of those weird mood-swing-relationships that I read an article about last month? Or are you just putting a show? Answer me, girl! Can’t you see that I am a friend who is currently being tortured with suspense?

It was only then I realized that it wasn’t Jake who would need that luck, it was me.
