Two - "Friends Know Best”
Noelle
“I’m coming over, honey, don’t panic or do anything rash!” Mom shouted down the phone worriedly. After Dad had told me I needed a roommate, Mom had came home and demanded to be a part of our ‘plan’.
“Yeah, okay Mom – calm down!” I replied, attempting to soothe her, imagining her pacing around the exquisitely decorated townhouse my parents owned.
“Oh, I knew once we stopped giving you your allowance things would crumble!” She cried; referring the decent sums of money my parents had given me every month which went towards groceries and rent – a reward for doing so well in my exams the year prior to me moving out.
Once I had got a job as an apprentice at the baker’s (my all time love was cooking and baking), my allowance had stopped. Things had gone pretty much downhill from there. I was foolish to move out so early in life, I thought sadly, now I’m suffering the consequences...
I turned my attention back to the phone in my hands; only to find that my mother had already hung up. She was probably running up the street at full speed, or driving the short distance between our houses so that she could help me figure my little problem out.
A series of impatient knocks sounded at the door, letting me know that Mom had arrived. I walked to the door quickly and let her in, smiling. “Mom, honestly, you could’ve gotten changed into some clean clothes and freshened up a little before coming over!” I said, laughing a little. Her hair was tied back in a messy braid, and she was still in her gym apparel, her work clothes.
“I know, sweetie, I should’ve – I definitely gave those ladies the workout of their life! But you are top priority, Noelle; this is a very serious matter!” Mom told me sternly.
“Mom – calm down! Hasn’t Dad told you our plan? I’ll get a roommate, and we’ll go splits on rent! It’s really simple!” I hoped she couldn’t spot the false tone in my voice. The truth was that I really didn’t want a roommate. What if it was a slob who just lay in bed all day? What if it was a girl who brought home a different guy every night?
No, my mind thought reassuringly, I will choose a perfectly normal and nice person, who will live peacefully aside me! “Noelle?” Mom broke through my thoughts, zoning me back into reality. “As I was saying, I think we should search around a little for a reliable person – perhaps we could place an ad in the newspaper?” Mom mused, a thoughtful, plotting expression set on her face.
“Uh, what’s with the ‘we’?” I asked, being rather blunt. The look of hurt that flashed across Mom’s face made me feel slightly guilty, but I knew I couldn’t let her take control. Mom would literally control everything. As she remained silent, a defeated sigh escaped my lips. “What I mean Mom, is that I’m the one getting a roommate! Shouldn’t I be the one planning?”
“Noelle, you are useless when it comes to organizing! I, however, am excellent! So I’m taking it upon myself to find you a lovely roommate!” She beamed at me. I replied with a raise of an eyebrow. “What, you think you can do this yourself?” Mom said sceptically, surprise edging into her voice.
“Mom, I really do love you, but I want to do this on my own. I’m a big girl now; I can face my own problems.” I replied as I smiled knowingly at the look of doubt Mom had plastered onto her face. “Don’t worry Mom, I can do this! I’m sure the person I pick will be a really nice, reliable, decent person!”
“Fine, I’ll go!” Mom stormed off in a huff, rushing out into the hallway, with a slam of the front door closely following.
I shrugged. “Well, I guess it is just me!” I went upstairs and into my bedroom, where I swiftly dug out my cell phone from my clutch purse. I dialled my best friend, Lucie, and waited for her to pick up.
“Hey, Noey! You okay?” A chirpy voice sounded from the end of the line. I couldn’t help but smile at the sound of my friend’s brightness.
“Lucie! Actually, I really need your help...” I quickly launched into a brief explanation of my roommate dilemma, Lucie staying silent through it all.
“Well Noey, I think I know the perfect solution!” Lucie responded happily. “It’s pretty simple, really! You want a roommate around your age, who obviously has to have some money to pay rent, so we do what everyone else like us should be doing!”
“And what’s that, Luce?” I asked my best friend.
“Party, of course!”

Adam
“. . . Peterson tackles . . . Peterson takes aim . . . Peterson shoots . . . Peterson scores!” I leapt up in victory from the lounger I had sprawled myself on, chanting in victory at beating my best friend Jake at a soccer videogame.
“Aw, man! Beaten by Peterson! The boys are gonna rip me for this!” Jake grumbled, though a smile was creeping its way onto his face. “I’m proud of you, bro! First win in, how long, Adam? Your first win ever?” We both chuckled, though Jake’s could be distinguished clearly due to the deep rumbling of his chest.
I punched Jake’s shoulder jokingly, and ran a hand through my tousled brown hair. “Dude, enough of the messing around – what can I do about Mom? She just won’t shut up about me getting a girlfriend and settling down! Settling down! I’m twenty two, I’m meant to party!”
Jake cracked a grin. “And speaking of parties, my friend, the super-hot Libby Evans, happens to be hosting an open-house tonight – wanna go?” He wiggled his eyebrows, “who knows Adam, maybe you’ll meet a girl and your Mom will be happy after all! And, we can get absolutely pissed and have a good time!”
A party . . . dancing, drinks, hot girls? “I’m game, Jakey boy!”
