A Few Weeks Later.
Reed.
We pull up to my father's house as my mother sighs heavily. The old house of abuse and abandonment sitting right in front of her. Since I got back from Cali, she called and told me she wanted to see my father. We tried plenty of times but she would always back out and say never mind. She had burned the letter because it didn't mean shit to her. My father apologizing from his mouth and the reason for the beatings is what she wants to hear.
A letter doesn't explain it all is what she said to me. We sit in the car for a while because I know she isn't ready. It's been a year since she's seen him so she's trying to prepare herself. I'll give her time and if she is not ready today I understand that too. I reach in the back seat and grab my pocketbook, taking out a honeybun. Once I take off the wrapper, I offer my mother a piece and she takes it while breaking a piece. She then hands it back and I bite into it.
"You've been nibbling all day." Shay informs. I laugh lowly while chewing.
"I know, I can't help it. I bought a lot of goodies because you know my book signing is today. On my break I can't leave the bookstore, so I have to eat when I can." She nods and sighs, turning her attention back to the house.
"I think I'm ready." She breathes deeply, grabbing the door handle.
"Are you sure?" She nods and opens the door and I get out right with her, wrapping my treat back and putting back in my purse. My mother looks over at the cars in the driveway then back at me confused. I shrug my shoulders because I never seen them before. My mother knocks on the door and I stand beside her. We wait patiently for an answer hearing the latches unlock. The door opens and Angeline smiles but it dims down when she sees my mother and I.
"What are you two doing here?" Angeline scoffs.
"I'm not here for you that's for sure." My mother replies, rolling her eyes.
"Well whatever you're here for I suggest you leave. You can get off my property." Angeline tries to close the door but my mother stops it with her foot.
"Last time I checked, my name was still on the deed to this house. If any one is trespassing, it's you. Now move." My mom pushes the door causing Angeline to stumble back. We both step in and see a living room full of women and men with the Bible in their hands. My father sitting at the head of the sitting area, slowly standing up in shock.
"Sh-sh-Shay?" He stutters. My mother says nothing as he stands there completely shocked.
"Hello Hardrick." My mother greets with her head held high.
"Now goodbye Hardrick. Come on you have to leave we are in the middle of Bible study." Angeline says while snapping her fingers.
"I'll leave when I'm good and got-" I pull my mom back to calm her down and shake my head. All these church people will raise hell if she starts cursing up in here.
"Look, tell her to stay in her lane and we won't have problems." My mother sternly warns.
"Her has a name." Angeline confirms.
"Oh, I can think of plenty of other names. I was nice enough to say her or would you prefer hoe?" My mom questions angrily.
"Lord have mercy Jesus!" One of the women call out, fanning herself.
"What? It's in the Bible." My mother justifies smartly.
"You know you didn't mean it that way through." Angeline mumbles.
"And you ain't denying it either, because this man was married yet you slept with him and had his child like the tool you are. Please don't get me started!" My mother starts. Angeline stands there completely silent as her and my mother stand face to face. Out of no where my father pulls my mother toward him, hugging her as she sobbed.
