Chapter 24

You know just what to say
Shit, that scares me, I should just walk away
But I can't move my feet
The more that I know you, the more I want to
Something inside me's changed
I was so much younger yesterday, oh
I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you
Don't need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo
By the way, by the way, you do things to my body
I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you

They had walked for miles, the bright sun warming their sunkissed skin. She'd studied the map  before she even set foot outside, she knew exactly where they were going and how they were to get there. She was ready to fight, ready to take back something before she lost it forever.

Georgina cast a sidelong glance to Matt, who's gaze was trained on the path ahead of them. He twirled a glinting silver blade between his fingers, oblivious to the fact she was watching him. She wondered why he bothered to help her. Matt had no obligation towards Greenview, he hadn't even met Lauren. Yet he still helped her. Perhaps it was boredom, that he didn't have anything better to do. Maybe it was the prospects of a place to live. She didn't know.

It occured to her that she didn't know much about Matt at all. She didn't know where he came from, how he survived, why he came to be on his own in the middle of a forest while Negan hunted her friends. He just happened to be there, happened to help her when she needed it most. He just stepped into her life and turned her everything upside down.

"Where are you from, Matt?" She asked once she settled her mind on one question. He looked at her through eyes she couldn't read, he frowned slightly, but covered it instantly.

"Five miles outside Atlanta city," He replied simply, his signature smirk dancing on his beautiful lips.

"Have you been alone for long?" She pressed casually, "No group?"

"I had a group," He said quickly, and she could almost have sworn that his eyes darkened. She decided that she wouldn't ask any more on that topic of convirsation. She knew that if he really wanted to tell her, he would. "I left."

"Oh," Was all she could say. She dropped it and continued to walk, but she noticed Matt's eyes on her every few seconds and he almost looked worried. She left behind her trivial thoughts and on the fact that she was going to get Lauren out of the hell she was residing.

They had walked for another couple of hours before Matt had led her towards a small cottage as the evening sun began to show. She let her mind wander to what such a beautiful house would have looked like years ago. Now, just overgrown and neglected. She imagined an old couple living there together, contented in living out the remainder of their lives in eachothers company. In such a restless world, she was enticed by the thought of a simple existence.

"We can stay here until nightfall," Matt said, trying the door only to curse when it refused to open. He didn't bother to find another opening, he retracted the butt of his ammo-less gun and smashed it against the nearest window, the shards of glass falling free.

"You'll attract the dead, dumbass."

Matt smirked.
"I'll kill them."

Georgina rolled her eyes and followed Matt through the broken window, careful not to cut herself on the shards that remained. She squinted through the dim light, the smell of rot and dust invading her lungs. She coughed and flicked on her torch she had found in the previous house. She had only been able to find a couple used batteries, and she doubted it would even last much longer. She had landed in a living room, thick layers of dust coating each piece of furniture.

She passed room to room, gently pushing open the doors and peering inside. She found nothing. She heard Matt call an all clear and she turned to leave only to see a door slightly ajar. She pulled it open, peering into the dark basement steps. Aside her better judgement, she continued down the cold concrete steps. She scoured the room, noticing the abundance of empty cans and water bottles. Someone had lived there at some point. She moved further into the basement, only to stop when her flashlight flickered. She hit it against the wall and cursed as the light dimmed to nothing. She squinted through the darkness, taking a few steps towards what she believed was the exit. She bumped up against something solid and she heard a crash as glass hit the floor.

Georgina yelped. She could hear Matt's voice calling to her. The door opened and his footsteps filled the void of silence.

"Gina?" He called, his tone laced with worry, "Where are you?"

"Here," She replied, blushing slightly. She thanked the darkness for once, even though she hated it.

She heard his steps move towards her and a warm hand grasped her forearm. She didn't jump from the contact, she felt better because of it. He held onto her, and she felt her breath fall short.

"Do you have a light?" She whispered, and almost as if he was snapping out of a daze, Matt released her arm.

"Hold on."

She heard him fish around inside his pocket until he found what he was looking for. He clicked down and a small flame appeared into the dark. Georgina chuckled at the sight of the lighter, and the miniscule light it gave. She could barely see the outline of Matt's face. She could only see his lips, and the shadow of his eyes. She felt herself smiling, the gentle warmth of the lighter drifting towards her face. She realised how close she was to him, his breath fanning against her cheeks. Only a flame to part them.

She felt her stomach churn anxiously. Her heart fluttering, the beat picking up pace over ever torturous second. His hand found its way to her cheek, gently brushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear. He brushed his thumb over her lips, her pulse quickening at his gentle touch. She cupped her hand over his, leading it down, over the curve of her breast until it rested on her hip. She took the ligher from his hand and let the light diminish, moving her mouth along his jaw and to his ear, her breath warming his skin. She smiled into the darkness.

She slowly snaked one hand into his hair, letting the anticipation linger in the air. Her voice was a low, seductive whisper.
"Nice try."

Greenly Police Station wasn't far from Greenview at all. Perhaps twenty miles at most.  Even shrouded in the darkness she could see the Saviors as they patrolled their base. Their Sanctuary. She knew the name, she'd heard it plenty of times as she tailed the Saviors for months, yet never actually finding it. She wondered where, in that creme-coloured building, was her friend. It was walled, but low enough that she could enter once given help. The gates were heavily guarded and every few minutes a Savior appeared and swept the perimeter.

"It looks like they usually stay around that bonfire past dark," She whispered to Matt who watched on with hooded eyes, "We have roughly four minutes to get inside before the outside guard raises alarm. After that, I don't know where to go or how many Saviors will still be inside."

"She's probably in one of the cells," Matt added, "Once we get inside they shouldn't be too difficult to find."

She paused, thinking over her plan, as badly planned as it was.

"Are we ready for this?" He asked.

"We have to be."
