Tàiyáng's POV
As I leaned closer to her, I gently placed my hand on her cheek. I watch as she closes her eyes. Why would anyone want to hurt her?
"Make sure you put ice here," I tapped on her cheek. "It will ease the soreness." With that, I quickly retracted my hand and took a step back. Breathing in the cold air helped me cool down my thoughts and feelings.
"Well, we better go inside." Stumbling on her words, Songbird grasps the handle to the door and escapes inside the house.
Inwardly reproaching myself, I awkwardly follow behind her. Inside the atmosphere was light and I saw Jùn blowing up balloons.
"The party hasn't started yet?"
"Nope," Jùn shook his head. "Xiǎo went to go play with the girls outside until Míngqín got back."
Right after Jùn spoke, three little girls ran inside and shouted that it was time. Dimming all of the lights, Songbird walks into the mainroom with a cake full of lighted candles.
Quickly turning off the lights, we his in underneath a cloak of darkness as we waited until Xiǎo entered the house.
Suddenly the door slowly opened and we jumped out as we yelled "surprise!" The look of shock on Xiǎo face was priceless. All throughout the party, we made sure he felt special.
When I gave him the wrapped basketball, he looked slightly confused until I explained that Jùn and I were going to show him how to play. Seeing him so surprised and grateful made me realize the many things I also had to be thankful of.
After the sun was fully asleep and Xiǎo began to get tired, Jùn and I said our goodbyes and left. The crunching of snow beneath our shoes fill my ears. We passed a couple of older ladies that were at an open food stall when we were walking through town. I had to hide a smile when I hear then whispering about us wearing torn skinny jeans in the winter.
"Some night." Jùn whispered as he reminisced about the party.
"Yeah....""I think I gained a little brother tonight." He laughed into the quiet nightsky.
"Yep, I gave him a basketball and he gave me memories that I will always treasure. Reminds me of when I was his age."
Jùn snorted. "Now you sound like an old guy. Besides, you were nothing like him at that age, I bet."
Finding my house, I wave goodbye to Jùn before I insert my key and slowly sneak inside. But the lights immediately are turned on and I am greeted by a not-so-happy brother.
"Hey Sēnlín, did I disturb your studying?"
"You are so lucky that Mom and Dad are gone. Or else you would be in serious trouble, young man!"
"Good thing I have a brother like you." I complimented him to appease the raging monster.
Sēnlín rolled his eyes in frustration. "Good thing you weren't born first or our whole family would be ruined."
I sighed. Since Sēnlín is the firstborn, he inherited the duty to take over the family medical practise. Sēnlín also had to make a lot of sacrifices since he had to take care of me while he was a teenager.
"I'm sorry to make you worry." I dropped my head in shame.
Sēnlín let out an exasperated sigh. "Geez, I might as well be your mother. Go wash up and I'll reheat up dinner."
"Ahhh. I think I'll pass." I said while trying to inch away from the kitchen. Without even turning his back he told me that the Aunty next door made it.
