Tàiyáng POV
The bright lights of the upcoming buildings notified me that we were nearing the city again. I take a quick glance at Songbird only to smile when I see her sleeping. Her head was leaned against the car door as she must have been worn out from our date. I hope she didn't push herself too much. Maybe I should have waited longer before asking her out....
Looking in the rearview mirror, I notice a suspicious car behind us. How long has that car been following us?!
In order to prove my fears, I take a couple of right turns without making it obvious that I was making a complete circle. Upon seeing the same unmarked car following us, my heart began to pound as adrenaline rushed through my body. I tighten my hands on the steering wheel as I look down at my gas meter and frown.
I check to make sure Songbird as still asleep before I smoothly maneuvered the car through a couple of lanes and turns. Once I temporarily lost the unmarked car, I search for a place that we could rest for the night since it was getting dark and I was running out of gas.
"Songbird?" I asked as I gently nudged her awake. "Can you keep your eyes out for a place to stay? I'm running out of gas and we are still pretty far from home."
"Okay." She said innocently as she peered through the dark window with her sleepy eyes.
If he just wanted me, it would make sense. But why would he involve her in this? I won't let him hurt her if I can help it.
Songbird snaps me back to the present as she motions towards the bright light of a hotel sign that was up ahead. Easing the car into a parking space that was near the back of the building, I unbuckle my seat belt and walk around the car to help Songbird. Her legs were a little wobbly from all the exercise she did today which made me frown. I should have been more perceptive. Why didn't I notice that she was tired?
With a heavy sigh and a note to myself to be more perceptive of her health, I hurridly rush her into the hotel. Leading her to a comfy couch that was in the lobby, I make my way to the reception desk to ask for rooms.
"I'm sorry, we only have one room left." The nice lady at the desk said as she checked her papers. It will have to do. We need a place to take cover until the sun rises before I even dare step outside.....
"That will be fine." I answered in a hurry as I kept checking behind my back. The receptionist handed me our room key after I signed my name. Grabbing Songbird's hand, I quickly ushered her upstairs with me.
"What's going on..." Songbird asked as I hear the fear that was interlaced in her words. She looked into my eyes and could see my apprehension.
"As long as you stay beside me, you will be fine. I'll tell you in the morning. I promise!" I wanted to tell her right now, but my mind was on hyperspeed and I couldn't think straight.
Unlocking the room with the key card, I'm disappointed to find only one bed. It's better than nothing.
Songbird gasped. "What are we going to do?"
I soften my voice when I saw her worried face. "Nothing. I'm going to sleep on the floor and you are going to sleep on the bed."
"But that wouldn't be fair...."
Aiyo, does this girl not understand that boys and girls our age shouldn't be in the same room let alone in the same bed together without feeling anything?
I grab her hand and lead her into the small room and close the door behind us. When Songbird excused herself so she could go to the bathroom, I dropped our bags onto the ground and walked towards the only window in the room. Making sure they were secure and locked, I peak outside, but I can't see anything. Covering my mouth in frustration, I spot the nearby desktop computer that the hotel offered in every room.
Thank goodness!
I turn the computer on and began typing furiously as I overided the hotel's controls and began to install a hand-made surveillance video. I sync the desktop computer to my phone before I tie it on top of the doorframe outside. Checking the computer monitor, I hit one final button before the once blank screen displayed the front door of our hotel room.
Now I will know whoever is outside without going near the door.
When I hear the sound of the bathroom door opening, I quickly shut the monitor off. I'll turn it back on when she goes to sleep.
Songbird walks outside of the bathroom and begins to rub her eyes. She looks so adorable when her hair is wet. I shook my head from my thoughts.
"I still don't like the thought of you sleeping on the floor....what about your leg?" She asks as her eyes dropped to my leg.
"My leg is healed." I reasurred her. Walking to the coat closet, I find a spare pillow I can use. Taking the outer cover off of the bed, I laid it on the floor and dropped the pillow.
"This is where I am sleeping. And that," I point to the bed, "Is where you are sleeping. End of discussion."
Sighing, Songbird complies as she slides in between the covers. I hate acting tense, but this incident actually has me.....scared.
Turning the lights off, I listen to the soft sound of her breathing. Her breath calmed my nerves as I accidentally fall into a deep asleep.
I should have been watching the monitor....
********
Hearing a loud thump, I jerk straight up from the floor. I perk my ears, but the deafening sound of silence strikes fear into my heart. Getting up on my feet, I silently walk towards the computer and turn the monitor on. Seeing no one, I shut the screen down and head towards the bathroom. The bright light blinds my sleepy eyes as I splash water on my face. I have a bad feeling....should I call Sēnlín?
I shake my head as I figured that I was just over-reacting. Turning the lights off, I blindly walk out into the dark room since my eyes hadn't adjusted yet. Seeing a dark figure in front of me, my heart skips a beat.
Before I could reach behind me to pull out my weapon, the dark figure bumps right into me. The shadow felt soft which made me relax. As my eyes adjust, I can make out the slight form of Songbird. This could have turned out a lot worse!
"Shouldn't you be in bed?" I asked as I carressed her silky head like I was petting a small kitten.
But her head was down so I couldn't read her expressions. Wrapping her arms around my waist, I immediantly stiffen up. "Don't leave me."
"I told you that I wouldn't ever again......" but before I could finish, she tightens her hold on me.
Sighing, I rub her back and whisper to her that I wasn't going to leave her. I should be happy that she is hugging me, but my blood runs cold when she whispers another name that isn't mine. " Gē ...... why did you leave?"
"Gē? As in Gēgē? Panick sets in as I gently lift her chin. Her eyes were open, but were glazed over. Is she sleep walking? "Shhh....I'm right here." I soothingly say as I slowly lead her to her bed. When we get to the bed, she slowly gets in, but doesn't release her hold on my hand. When I tried to remove my hand, she tightens her hold as if her life depended on it.
"Songbird ....I'm going to be right beside you, but I'm going to be on the floor. Just like your Gēgē."
When she tries to sit up I lightly push her back down onto the bed. "You can't sleep on the floor, your wounds on your back will worsen."
Unfortunately, trying to reason with someone who is sleep-walking doesn't work. Sighing, I motion for her to make room and I slowly lay beside her on the bed. Resting my arm underneath my head I turn to face her. Smiling, she finally closes her eyes, but our hands are still holding each other. As if to protect her from her nightmares, I wrap my arms around her as if to protect her from her nightmares. Her scent intoxicated my senses as I close my eyes.
I'm never going to go to sleep tonight!
