_____________________After a week, I was able to return to my night shift. Rushing through my usual routine of dressing up, I make my way downstairs in haste only to be met with silence. In my rush, I didn't even notice the absence of the music. I look around me in confusion until someone taps me on the shoulder. Before I can scream, Rèn covers my mouth and motions for me to be quiet. Nodding my head, he releases me and grabs my hand.
"We need to hurry; another initiating is about to happen." He urgently said as he leads me into the dark hallway called the Dragon's mouth. Climbing onto an old elevator that didn't have doors, he punched the basement button and we waited until the elevator motor started. The creaking of the chains and the gears working together filled the awkward silence.
"I usually don't come to these things..." I mumbled as the eerie light in the elevator brought chills through my body. Good thing Rèn is with me. If the elevator gets stuck I won't be alone.
"It's that new boy...."
"What new boy?"
"Jīngxì has the new boy participating in this initiation."
"What kind did the boy choose?"
"He didn't. Jīngxì chose this battle."
"Jīngxì rarely breaks the laws of the Initiation. What did he choose?" I asked suspiciously.
"Cage Fighting." "Ahh.........What?! That's crazy?! Is he planning on killing the boy?" I yelled in outrage over the loud sound of the elevator as my temper flared. Turning to Rèn, I glared at him for an explanation.
"It's not my fault. Jīngxì insisted upon it for some reason. The doctor and I tried to talk him out of it, but he kept mentioning something about a full-proof plan."
"He didn't listen to you guys? Aren't you three close friends?"
"That's why I was waiting for you. You need to talk to Jīngxì so he doesn't end up killing the boy!"
"Why do you think he will listen to me if he ignored you two?"
"You have an influence over him that no one else does..."
I nod my head in understanding. Compared to the life I live in the day; the night life is a lot more dangerous and closer to reality then anyone would want.
That boy's blood won't be the only one spilt tonight.
When the elevator dinged, I purposefully walked into the underground arena which we called the "Pitts." A basic initiation only occurs after the trainee undergoes two years of training. But they all choose their battles that matched their fighting style. What is Jīngxì thinking?
The roar of a hyped-up crowd made me lengthen my strides. Oh no, they started already!
Rèn and I sprinted over to the open arena where we spotted a boy of fifteen fighting against a senior member that clearly had more experience points. Cage fighting. Only reserved for the elite members.
I watched in horror as every time the boy struggled to get up, the older man would kick him in the face causing blood to explode everywhere. "I'm stopping this right now!" I screamed as I made my way to the only man sitting down in the crowd of spectators.
"Wait! The boy's pride will be hurt if you try to stop the battle that already started." Rèn reasoned as he grasped my hand to prevent me from moving.
