"Hey Jackson." I say walking downstairs. "I've got some news."
"Yeah?" Jackson asks with pancakes full in his mouth.
"I have to leave this morning." I say sadly.
"Already?" Jackson asks pouting slightly.
"Yeah I'm sorry. I'll be back soon. I visit all the time." I say smiling.
"Okay." Jackson says reluctantly.
That's about how our conversation went just a few hours ago. Now I'm boarding a private plane all the way to Georgia.
Zach's POV
"You can't save this leg." I say exasperated.
"But I'm a runna'" the man says in his thick accent.
"I know your a runner you've said that. Okay so I can save this leg but you won't have lots of power with it. Your better off with a prosthetic." I tell him.
"Says who?" He asked.
"Someone experienced." I say nodding.
"Ye know this guy?" He asked.
"Very closely." I say leaving. I see one of the head orthopedics and say. "I'm a pediatric Doctor. Don't put me with kids over the age of 17. You know this!" I sigh.
"Sorry Dr. Wilson but your one of or best programmers." She shrugs.
"Don't do it." I scold. I walk outside and pick up my phone. I hit redial like I had plenty of times.
"Holly where are you?" I ask into the phone after it beeps off. She didn't have signal or her phone was off but I had the sense it wasn't just her phone.
Hollys POV
"Hello ma'am" I say at the counter. "I'm Holly Thorn. I was called here yesterday from an anonymous patient?"
"Okay..." The women starts. "Try room 362 on the surgical floor."
"Okay?" I say and start down the hall to the door number it says. I open the door.
"Holly finally." Somebody strangely familiar gasps. "I have to.." She drifts off. "Talk to you."
"Abbey? What's happened to you?" I squeak. I've barely ever seen her since I left for college which has been four years ago.
"I don't have a lot of time left." Abbey says her face pale. "I was in a car accident and I can't hold on anymore Holly." Abbey cries.
"Shh." I soothe her.
"I need you to take Tyler." Abbey says.
"Tyler?" I ask my voice itching to know but I have a knowing feeling that I know what she means.
"My baby." Abbey groans in pain. "He's a newborn. I don't trust anybody else please." Abbey asks then her eyes turn glassy and her head rolls back. Then her heart monitor flatlines.
"Can't you do something?" I look at the doctor who's been Standing beside of me since I came in. I feel bad because I don't know wether I want her to live more because she's my friend or because I can't handle a kid. I've never wanted a kid.
"She signed a DNR. I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do." He apologizes.
"She told me to take her baby." I whisper.
"You don't have to but it's in her will." (I don't know if I spelt that right) he says.
"No I have to. She trusted me. At least I'll foster him until we can find a better home for him. I'm not cut out for this. Where is he?" I ask and regret every word I say. I can't do this. I can't do this.
"Down in the nursery Ms. Thorn." The doctor tells me and leads me down to the nursery. I'm already having trouble keeping myself together and seeing the tiny life laying in the dome like container.
"is he healthy?" I ask the doctor and sniffling slightly.
"As can be." The doctor replies.
"What about the father can't he take him?" I say turning toward the doctor hopefully.
"Died in the accident too." He replies. "You shouldn't take him if your not ready."
"No that's what she wanted." I shake my head. "When will he be released?" I ask.
"Today if you want." He says. "She's been hanging on for a few days just to talk to you."
"Okay let me sign him out then." I say nervously. Maybe I can't keep him forever. I can't handle that. I'll never be able to handle that. But I'll keep him and foster him for a while. Like Abbey wanted.
"Here." The doctor says handing me a clipboard and pin. I look at the bottom.
Parent or Guardian Signature______
This kid will never have parents. So I've got to be here for him now. I sloppily scribble down my signature and hand it back to the doctor.
"Need a carrier?" He asks me.
"Definitely." I reply fiddling with my thumbs. He brings me out a grey and blue carrier car seat thing with a onesie laying across the top. "Thank you so much." I say taking it from him. I go over to the baby in the clear container. I open the top and look down at Tyler. He has dirty blond hair and blue eyes. I know that some babies have blue eyes when their little and then they change when they get older.
"Hi Tyler." I smile down at him. "I'm going to take care of you now though you probably don't know what I'm saying." I sigh. "I just want you to know before any of this starts that your not going through this alone."
