Hollys POV

The airport in California is crowded. I push my way through and find my bags.

"Mrs Thorn! What are you doing back in California?" Somebody pushes into my face. Another news reporter.

"Just visiting." I lie and push away. I pull out a baseball cap and sunglasses to cover any recognition for people. My phone buzzes in my pocket and I pull it out and answer it.

"Hi Kacy." I smile. "Hold on it's crowded in here." I step outside and hide in a telephone box.

"Where are you!" She screams through the phone.

"The airport. I need a ride." I say solemnly.

        "You didn't!" She screams.

"I really just need a ride Kacy." I say sternly.

"Okay I'll be there in five." Kacy promises and I hear the monotonous beep of the other end of the line ending.

"Ma'am." Somebody taps my shoulder and I turn to see a women with short hair and probably a seven or eight year old girl beside of her. The little girl wears an old coat that was too big and holy jeans. But worst of all her head was shaven clean from any hair and she was sickly pale.

       "Yeah?" I ask.

"My daughter was wanting an autograph? If you can of course. She just started undergoing cancer treatments a few months ago and I read her your book. It really inspired her." She says and I smile. I squat down in front of the kid.

"How old are you?" I ask.

"Nine." She answers in a small scared voice. Nine? She could pass as seven maybe six.

"Oh really? Here's your autograph." I pull out a scrap of paper and scribble my name on it. "Here." I say standing up and facing the mother. I pull out my wallet and scribble down some things. "One thousand dollars. It's not much but cancer treatments are extremely expensive and your probably going through some rough times. Good luck." I tell her handing her the check.

"Thank you so much." She smiles and hugs me.

"No problem." I say hugging the kid one more time before looking up to see Kacy only a minute later.

As soon as I close the passenger door and all the windows are rolled down.

"You didn't." She says warningly.

"Oh but I did." I say almost like I just realized.

"Why! You two are perfect together. you've been through everything together!" Kacy says completely surprised.

"He wants kids Kacy." I say seriously which makes her stop and just look at me sympathetically.

"Says who?" She asks but she knows the truth.

"You've seen him with Ginny. And he's a pediatric.. What ever he is! Pediatric. Kids. I can't do that Kacy."

"Okay lemme just take you back." Kacy had been living around the California area since she switched schools and was now getting her masters at a college near mr. And Mrs. Smiths home.

"Please." I say kind of annoyed.

Zach's POV

"Hey bud." I say high fiving the yellow twelve year old in the hospital bed.

"Hey dr. Wilson." He says but depression seems to have set far in on this teen.

"Hey Mike." I say and look toward his parents. "The soonest we can get a surgery is tomorrow."

"Can we speak to you outside?" The mom asks me timidly.

"Of course." I say.

"You know you can say it in front of me. I know I might have a chance at dying." Mike says.

I smile at him sadly and lead them to the hallway.

"Do you really think this will work?" She asks me.

"Liver transplants work all the time." I say. "But we will do everything we can."

"Thank you." The father tells me.

"No problem sir." I nod and go off to check one my next patient.

"Mrs. Hammary." I say politely and walk into her empty room except the sixteen year old cardio patient with glittery pink earbuds in. "Mrs. Hammary!" I say louder over the faint music. She looks up at me with a questioning look.

I motion for her to take them out and mouth it out the same time. Eva Hammary looked down at her phone and turned off her music then jerked rather violently, her earbuds out.

"What?" She says sounding annoyed.

"Where are your parents?" I ask.

"Went out for lunch.. I don't know- three hours ago?" She says distractedly.

"Can you call them and tell them to come back?" I ask like it's obvious.

"No? They told me not to bother them." She shrugs and turns back to her phone.

I groan and roll my eyes, leaving the room. The cardio surgeon for the day, Dr. Whites walked by me and asked,

"Did the parents sign the release paper?"

"Her parents aren't here." I say and keep walking.
