Mission Creek High...

Third POV:

Leo walks over to Janelle, who is sitting at a table with sign up sheets for the annual one-on-one basketball tourney, "Hey, Janelle, how about that lunch special today?"

"Really?" She asks flatly, "That's your opener?"

"Well, I was gonna go with 'Where have you been all my life?' but I'm only, like, 14," Leo shrugs, "so..." Janelle nods and Leo changes the subject, "What are you up to?"

"I'm signing people up for the annual one-on-one basketball tourney." She answers.

"Ew." Leo's face scrunches in disgust, "How'd you get stuck doing that?

"I love basketball." Janelle tells him.

"Me, too!" Leo lies, "I too love the basketball. In fact, they call me 'Hoop Master Leo.'"

"No, they don't." Janelle states.

"No, they don't." Leo nods. Janelle turns back to her papers, but Leo gets her attention again, "Hey, check this out." Janelle looks up at him and Leo throws his water bottle, aiming for the recycling bin, but it hits Trent in the back of the head. Trent's head snaps up and Leo questions loudly, "Where'd that come from? Who threw that?"

A guy walks by and Janelle stands, trying to get his attention, "Oh, hey, do you wanna sign up for the one-on-one tourney?" He walks away, turning her down as she finishes, "We need people badly."

"Oh." Leo walks over, "Sign me up."

"Not that badly." Janelle states.

"One-on-one tourney?" Trent asks, walking over, "Don't you mean 'The Trent Show'?" Trent puts his arms around Leo and Janelle, "Starring Trent... With a special appearance by..." he points to himself, "Trent."

"Trent, you're the five-time champ. I already signed you up." Janelle informs him.

"You've been in high school for five years?" Leo questions in disbelief.

"No." Trent answers before turning to the side and counting on his fingers. He turns back to Leo and Janelle, "Yeah. Hey, little guy.. .think fast!" Trent pretends to throw the basketball at Leo and Leo flinches.

Trent laughs and Leo admits, "Okay, you got me."

"Ah, that never gets old." Trent walks away.

"Yes. Yes, it does." Leo states.

"No one's signing up for the tournament because he wins every year." Janelle tells Leo.

"Oh, look how sweet." Leo looks at Trent, "He's autographing that kid's cheek."

"I am literally all up in your face." Trent tells the kid as he blows on the ink, "And I used his freckle to dot the 'I.'"

"If he just spelt 'Trent' with an 'I,' he's gonna be here a lot longer than five years." Leo states.

Janet's POV:

I walk up to Brian, who had just closed his locker. I put my hand on his arm, "You want to hang out after school?"

Brian turns to me, sighing, "Well, with my dad in his condition, I have to get over to the store. It's stock day."

I nod, "Is he taking a night off?"

"He refused to go to the hospital." Brian informs me.

I knit my eyebrows together, "I thought he was supposed to be recovering."

Brian nods, "He is, he's just.. he needs to feel like he's in control."

I nod before looking at Brian in concern, "How are you doing?"
