Chapter 30

Luke's point of view
Today is the day of my first band practise with Jayden and his mates. Yesterday I told them I would join the band so hopefully we can use this band practise to get to know each other, first hand.
When the final class of the day finishes, I grab my bag and put my stuff away before meeting Jayden, Josh and Inigo at the back gate. We begin the short but certainly very awkward walk to Josh's house. I didn't really know what to talk about since I don't really know much about what they're interested in. I think Jayden notices because he keeps trying to involve me in the conversation.

"So what are you into?" Josh asks as we reach his house.
"Um, I spend a lot of time playing my guitar or listening to music." I begin. "I've never really been into sport." 

They all nod before Josh speaks again, "What kind of music do you listen to?"

A long list of bands start flooding through my brain. "I really like Rock, pop punk, and heavy alternative stuff." I say. They seem pretty impressed by my choices.
"What's your favourite band?" Inigo asks.
I take a second to think before I give my answer "I think if I had to choose it would be Motion City Soundtrack."
"Nice. Maybe we could cover some of their stuff." Jayden says before grabbing his bass and making sure it's all in tune.

"We should probably just jam a bit so we can work out what our group dynamic is."  I suggest. The boys stand up and go grab their instruments and I take my guitar out of the case. I haven't played in two since that time in the music room so I was really eager to start playing.

"What song should we play?" Josh asks.
We all stand there thinking.
"What's something we all know?" I ask.

"How about 'Feeling This' by Blink 182?" Jayden suggests.

I nod and plug my guitar in ready to start. We play the song with no stuff ups or anything and we honestly sound pretty good.

We play a few songs before Josh's mum tells us that I can stay and have dinner with the boys if I want to. I quickly text my mum and ask and she gives her permission.
We decide to order pizza and when it gets here, we all sit down and eat on the floor of Josh's shed.

"So Luke, are you going to formal with anyone?" Jayden asks.
I nod and smile when I think about my answer but then suddenly worry abouy what they might think if I tell them who.

You see, I'm Bi and have been going out with my boyfriend Patty for about a year now. So I'm going with him. I know the boys will find out anyway but that doesn't make me worry any less.

"Who?" They all ask in unison. They honestly sound like a bunch of teenage girls.
"You wouldn't know them. They don't go to our school." I say, trying to get out of this conversation.
I think they notice my discomfort because they back off a little.
"If you don't want to tell us that's fine." Josh says.

I run my hands through my hair as I contemplate what to tell them. I guess they are just going to find out anyway.

"I'm a-actually going w-with a guy." I stutter quietly.
They look surprised, but not in a judgemental kind of way. I exhale deeply at the relief.
"That's cool. We don't care what your sexuality is, people are just people and Love is just love." Jayden smiles.

"Thanks for not judging." I say, relieved.

"So what's the guys name?" Jayden asks.

"Patty. Patty Walters." I say. I blush as I think about him and how adorable he is.

"Wait, as in Patty Walters that in that band As It Is?" Inigo asks. (Let's pretend As It Is is a local Sydney band)

"Yeah." I say, shocked. "I didn't think you'd know them, they're only local."

"Yeah, I've seen them play live a few times and I really like them." Inigo says, excitement clear in his voice.

"Cool, well Patty and I have been going out for about a year so I went to his formal and he's coming mine."

"Aw, that's cute." They all smile, making my cheeks go even more red.

We finish our pizza before packing up and getting ready to leave. "So, have you had fun?" Josh asks me.

"Yeah I have. Thanks for making me feel welcome." I say. We say our goodbyes and head home.

I'm glad that was such a success because it turns out they're really nice guys.
