Running from the Rain

I'm falling. Falling through the empty space which I used to call "heart".
These places were always dangerous, I never knew why. No one ever came here. It was like the whole place was silent, dead. Here I only stuck to what was important. Being out of place got you killed.
I lost somebody to that once. Misty. Bright eyes, bloody ginger fur. She changed cats for the better, and they carried her fiery spirit to the grave.
They said there would be someone who would restore this place to the beauty it once had. When will that time be? I am tired. I am tired of following a path that led nowhere, a routine that would always backfire. I will be another lightless star in the sky.

I wasn't strong. Misty never carried strength on her. Her strength lay in words, and she yowled them to the sky.
I sat on the top branch of a tree, one of the few that hadn't fallen apart. The roots that had anchored us to this world was gone. My father had gone somewhere, he took my mother with him. I don't know where he's gone. I don't even know if he's coming back.
I saw May, stood at the river, trying to jump. I didn't stop her. No one else stopped her. I don't know if she's alive.
I had a brother, his name is Rowan. He scratched me, he thinks he is strong. I tried to tell him strength didn't come from claws, that strength wasn't everything. One thing that Misty did not know. A twoleg shot her down, but she fought to the end, May said. She lied. She died on impact.

It's officially leafbare now. The snow has fallen. The snow is soft, but it tore us apart. We were already broken.
My father never came back, nor did my mother. I guess they didn't want to lose their minds like everyone else had, but they had nothing to lose anyway.
Rowan prowls on a roof, asks me questions I can never answer. He left a while later, hoping to find food, but all he came back with was another bite on my ears.
I tried talking to May, she survived her fall, or maybe she never fell, I don't know. Her voice was clean and crisp, not slurred. She promised she'd come back for me but I don't know if she kept promises, or even if she would be alive tomorrow. We were all hungry, in ways more than love.
When I was younger I wanted rabbit instead of mouse, I wanted to explore the woods, I wanted my father to stop training me so hard. Now I want Misty, I want Leafbare to be over. I want my brother to bat at my ears and not bite. I want my mother to come back. I want May to be alive.
