"THREE, TWO, ONE!" The countdown echoed through the room, snatching everyone's attention. The camera flickered incessantly as the four of us bunched together, attempting to look our best for the snapshots. The excitement was palpable yet bittersweet knowing that in less than a day I'll be on the plane moving halfway across the world. I was lucky enough to join this night out.
Man, I'll miss it here.
In the midst of blaring music and flashing lights, my thoughts abruptly dispersed when my arms were pulled, "THIS IS OUR SONG!" Ayana, my best friend, hollered before dragging me towards the dance floor.
Bacario swung the camera over his shoulders, grabbing his boyfriend Toni before they vanished into the crowd. Without hesitation, Ayana and I joined the frenzy as "1738" blared through the speakers. Laughter, screams, and cheers synchronised with the pulsating beats.
As the remix kicked in, the energy went crazy. I soon found myself in a mosh pit between sweaty bodies and roaring hypes. "THIS IS CRAZY!" I shouted to Ayana, who danced with attitude. "AND LIT!" She yelled back.
"YEAH IMMA GRAB A DRINK!"I laughed and snaked my way through the mass of bodies. The tables stood abandoned, with only a few people lounging at the room's corners, deep in conversations or buried in their phones. Reaching the table of drinks, I scanned the available options.
"Wow... is that...Lawson?" A suave, buttery voice spoke from behind. I turned to find myself face-to-face with the school's renowned athlete.
Myles Tamerel.
"Almost didn't recognize you. Looking good in that cherry red. It really suits you," he complimented. His charming smile stood out against his rich, cinnamon complexion as he took a sip of his drink. I never new someone's teeth could be so white until now. It was almost unreal.
" Wouldn't have thought that this was your scene," he gestured towards the settings of the school's disco ball, a tradition at the end of every school year.
"Yeah, I thought I'd make an effort since this is my last day," I replied, popping open a can of Sprite.
"You're leaving?" His eyebrows rose as I smoothed down my straightened hair.
" That's a shame. We could have had more time to get acquainted," a small smile played on his lips. "Oh well, enjoy your night, beautiful," he raised his glass before fading into the crowd. Taking another sip, I savoured the cool, acidic fizz on my palate. It was a shame it took until now for him to approach me, just when I was about to leave.
Sigh
Glancing towards the dance floor, I spotted Ayana, Bacario, and Toni making their way toward the drinks. "Was that Myles Tamerell?" Ayana quirked her eyebrows.
"Girl, he's a fine one. Waves for days, teeth like pearls, killer smile, and tall to boot! If I wasn't with Toni, I'd—" Bacario's voice trailed off as Toni shot him a warning glance. Ayana and I burst into laughter.
"I'm really gonna miss you guys." I pouted as we had a group hug.
"Look on the bright side, you're escaping this shit-arse country," Ayana joked, flipping her honey-dyed hair. "Plus, what's the internet for? We'll still FaceTime and snap each other. It's only a year, right? After our A-levels, you'll be back for Uni."
"Yeah, but a lot can happen in a year."
"You're so dramatic! Life isn't a movie or a book." She laughed.
"Oh, but it is! I'm the star and you all are just extras." Bacario snapped his fingers as we rolled our eyes. My attention shifted to my phone ringing.
"Well, this is my cue. Kids, behave while I'm away," I hugged my best friends one last time before leaving the hall. I spotted the silver car across the street and made my way toward it, stealing one last glance at the building where I had spent the formative years of teenhood.
Goodbye, Chorsbon Academy.
