I was in the darkness of oblivion. I was floating with the effects of the alcohol leaving me with just my sober thoughts and a huge headache. I could occasionally feel a soothing warm touch on my forehead that often glided through my hair. It somehow took away some parts of the pain.
My light body became heavier by the second as if I was sinking. My eyes were still heavy when I opened them and the natural cinnamon scent of the duvet was replaced with earth. I opened my eyes a little wider and was greeted with darkness, faint screams and shouts can be heard at a distance. I tried to feel for my phone but the feeling of leaves and mud touched my hand instead. I jolted and sat up. I looked up to the moon slightly eliminating the trees with its radiance. Bits of mud and leaves stuck to my body as I stood to realize I still wore clothes from the party.
The fabric of the jeans and the cotton of the top latched onto my skin with dampness. One of my shoes was missing as I looked at my barefoot. I scanned the scenery and the only thing in view was the dim blood orange light ahead. Creeping further into the woods, the burning scent got stronger the more I walked and the sparser the trees got. The shouts and screams of terror became louder and clearer, it was as if people were panicking. My arms continued to push the branches out of the way and I was soon out of the trees and at the edge of the hills.
Flames lit up the trees on the other side of the chaotic clearing with fury while people launched their weapons at the large figure. My eyes sharpened at the sight, agony, and pain contoured its face contradicting the sorrow and hatred painted on the peoples'. A few scatters of dead bodies from both humans and animals could be seen nearby.
The thing ran on its fours towards the burning trees before it snapped its head back releasing a deafening howl that shook the ground. I hissed at the sudden ringing of my ears with the sound vibrating my eardrums. I stumbled back trying to gain balance but my vision began to get blurry by the second as my head felt heavier. Time distorted as everything slowed down until there was nothing. The chaotic scene faded into complete darkness and it felt like I was falling. The sinking reached such a speed that constricted my limbs and throat heading towards the bottom. I waited for the impact to hit.
My hands reached out to grab anything secure as I jolted up. Breathing heavily I looked at the darkness of the room. A slight light source peaked from underneath the door on the other side. Lifting my body off the bed I headed to the door, occasionally bumping into things. The door creaked opened once I stepped out into the hallway. My barefoot brushed against the beige carpet as I headed to the bathroom. This was my first episode of a lucid dream. It was probably a reflection of the painting back at home.
Unfamiliar paintings and family portraits paraded along the walls the more I walked. I furrowed my eyebrows as I observed a family portrait at the end of the hall. The woman had dark mahogany hair with captivating blue eyes while the older man stood fierce with fiery ginger hair and green eyes that pierced through the canvas. There were three children on the floor by their feet. Two girls and a boy. Both girls were ginger while the boy was a dark brunet. That is when it instantly hit. I wasn't home.
Panic began to strike at the thought of my parents blowing up my phone. I passed a mirror and caught the sight of my reflection. My damp coils were a bird's nest, my eyes were bloodshot red with mascara and eyeliner smeared into the bags underneath. The skin began to peel off of my chapped lips and my acne scars were once again visible.
Damn, I look rough.
I was no longer in my clothes from the party but a large black t-shirt that drooped over me reaching the mid of my thighs. I looked at the large clock above the mirror.
5 am
About to take another step, I heard one of the handles turn from one of the doors in the hallway. I quickly slipped back into the room I came from and jumped back underneath the duvet. Moments later, the door opened and closed. Footsteps came closer to the bed and the mattress dipped. My eyes instantly opened as I froze on my side.
