Chapter 36

Valentine's Day approached quickly, and when the day arrived, Pete and I decided to go on a date. It happened to be a school day, so I had to sneak it in between Potions and Transfiguration, but we still found time to go out to the lake. "Do you know what would be fun?" Pete asked as he stared out over the lake.

"What is it, Pete?" I asked.

The squid popped out of the lake for a second, and Pete waved to it as it dove back down into the water. Pete sighed and said, "I'm so glad that I get to feel the wind chill again before I get old. I think we should go ice skating." He took out his wand and Transfigured a nearby stick into a pair of ice skates.

"Pete, that's not a smart idea," I told him. "The ice around the edge of the lake is fragile, and it could break if you try to go skating."

"It's worth a try," Pete said. He laced the skates onto his feet, and took a few steps towards the lake. "See? I'm fine."

"Be careful," I said as Pete continued to skate around. Pete wasn't a particularly good skater, but it was still fun to watch him try.

"Come on, Sophomore Stump!" Pete exclaimed. "You should try this!" He tried to turn around, but the ice began to crack under him. Pete skated rapidly towards the shore, but it was too late, and he fell in the water. "Trick! Help!" he shouted. I reached into the freezing water and pulled him out. Then, I did a quick Charm to dry off Pete's robes. "You were right, Patty Boy," Pete said. "That was a terrible idea."

"I didn't mind," I said. "You looked cute out there."

"Thanks Patrick," Pete said. He wrapped his arms around me, and we ended up just cuddling out there by the lake for a while. Is this the start of a lifetime of laughter, or is this all going to end when Pete graduates and I leave for Chicago? I wondered. There was no way to know for sure, but I hoped that what Pete and I had would last forever.

Apparently, Pete was thinking the same thing, because he said, "We could be immortals, but not for long. How long can you stay here?"

I looked up at the clock. "I have to be at Transfiguration class in five minutes," I told him.

"Five minutes?" Pete said. "That's not enough."

"I know, but I have to go," I said. "We can meet up after dinner."

"See you soon, Trick," Pete said, giving me a nice, long kiss before I left. I then headed off to Transfiguration with Pete still on my mind. When I arrived in Professor Lester's classroom, I sat next to Dallon and pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill for note-taking. However, Professor Lester didn't start class right away.

"Hey guys," he said, wearing a brightly coloured shirt, as usual. "I have a big announcement to make."

"What is it?" Miss Jackson asked.

"Do you all remember when Dan and I went to Las Vegas for the Wizards' International Educational Nasty but Essential Rally?" Professor Lester asked.

"How could we forget about WIENER?" Esteban asked, and everyone in the classroom laughed, while I looked around in confusion. I still didn't understand what was so funny.

"Well... um... Dan and I... we ... kind of... well, this is awkward..." Professor Lester stammered.

All of a sudden, Professor Howell burst into the room. "I'll say it," he said. "Professor Lester and I got married in Vegas."

Everyone in the room cheered. "PHAN IS REAL!" Miss Jackson screamed.

"It was an accident!" Professor Lester argued.

"That doesn't matter," Dallon said. "Phan is still real, and don't deny your feelings for your fellow professor."

"I do suppose that Dan is pretty attractive," Professor Lester said, glancing over at the Defence Against The Dark Arts professor and causing everyone in the room to squeal in delight.

"It was just a casual affair, but now I've got a collar full of chemistry from your company," Professor Howell said.

By this point, everyone was screaming and generally freaking out. "This is the best day ever!" Miss Jackson screamed. "I told you all that Phan was real!"

I grinned and said, "I just knew that this ship would sail."

"Me too," Dallon said.

"I have to get back to teaching Defence Against The Dark Arts," Professor Howell said. "I'll see all of you sixth years soon." He whispered something in Professor Lester's ear that made him blush, and then left the room.

"Let's get back to learning," Professor Lester said. He then began a long-winded speech on Human Transfiguration, which few students listened to, and even fewer actually understood. Even Dallon seemed confused, but to be honest, nobody was focusing in the first place. After all, Professor Lester and Professor Howell had just told us that they had gotten married. Phan was real, and that was all that anyone really cared about.

By dinnertime, nearly everyone in the school had heard the news, and all throughout dinner, all we heard was the chatter of students talking about this new development. "I knew it!" Donnie shouted when Miss Jackson told him. "I just knew that Professor Howell and Professor Lester were together!"

"All of us knew," Miss Jackson said. "They went to the Yule Ball together two years ago! How could they not be together?"

"Are Professor Lester and Professor Howell really together?" Teddy asked.

"Yes!" Miss Jackson exclaimed. "Let me tell you all about it."

I continued to eat, while my classmates continued to chatter. After dinner, I went to the Hufflepuff Common Room along with the rest of my house. As I was finishing up my homework, Pete entered the room. "Patrick!" he exclaimed. "Did you hear that Professor Howell and Professor Lester got married while they were in Vegas?"

"I did," I said. "I was there when they made the announcement."

"That's so cool!" Pete exclaimed. "Phan is real now, and we're winning until the curtain's coming down!"

Pete and I talked about Phan for a while, but eventually Pete had to return to the Gryffindor Common Room. Once Pete left, I crawled into bed and almost immediately fell asleep. I knew that I would have sweet dreams that night.
