Lola stepped back and it was clear that she could burst into tears any second. The emotion on her face was a mix of sadness and confusion, maybe even a bit of anger.

“Nathan, what are you- why?” Lola whispered and continued shuffling backwards.

“Lola, you” Nathan stopped to try and form a proper sentence. “I miss you so God damn much Lola” He took a careful step forward as Lola took yet another step back, obviously uncomfortable with the decreasing space between them.

“I-” Lola shook her head to silence Nathan as he began to speak again. She looked down and turned around, ignoring both Nathan and myself.

He turned around to face me, he looked hurt, broken and every other emotion anyone could possibly feel in this circumstance. Being bluntly rejected by a beloved.

I took Nathan's wrist in my hand and led him out the bedroom door and down the stairs.

“Nathan, what are you doing here, and why are you drunk.” I spoke softly to be sure Lola's parents couldn't listen in.

“I wanted to see Lola and the boys, they got me drunk. I didn't mean to I swear. I'll try to be better just for her. If I try really hard, she might want to talk to me, right?” I looked into his eyes as they met mine, and all I could see was pure sadness. He was utterly and completely broken. It wasn't the first time I'd seen this type of emotion in someone before. I'd seen it in my dad when mum passed away. As well as my sister, twice. And I saw it in Lola. When I looked into Lola's eyes, I saw a girl, screaming for help. Screaming for someone to save her from the nightmare that has become her life.

I sighed, “you can't just come here like this and expect Lola to accept you back into her life.”

“What am I supposed to do, I love her.” he slurred.

I decided to take a moment and collect my thoughts. My mind was tornado of thoughts and I couldn't grasp reality. The events of the past month have been too surreal. Even though I lost both my parents, I struggle to come to terms with what Lola has gone through. I can't imagine being physically abused by someone for an entire year, and not being able to speak a word of it. Having to lie to the police, and have to witness you're own brother being beaten to death. This is not what Lola, the most beautiful human, deserves to live with.

“We need to get you home Nathan.” I sent a text to my sister Billy, asking her to come by and take Nathan home.

Nathan fumbled with the zip on his hoodie before finally zipping closed. “Can you please tell Lola that I'm sorry, that I love her and that I will bring her cookies on Monday.”
