"I think my dad kidnapped Augustus." I told Theo, using his house as a safe haven.
"Yeah, sure, come in."
I plopped down on Theo's couch, muting his TV. Theo sat down in his chair, kicking his feet up on the majorly scuffed coffee table. "Why do you think your dad kidnapped August?"
"Because he's the only other person who was there in the house the day August went missing. It had to be someone in the house, right? And he just happens to go on a business trip that day?"
"Have you told the police?"
"I only came up with this theory today. I told my mom and she thought I was crazy."
"Tell the cops."
"I want to go out and find him on my own. But he could be anywhere."
"Yeah."
I leaned my head back and sighed. How will I find him?
"You know where my father is, don't you?" I questioned, standing outside of Genevieve's apartment.
She bit her lip, not wanting to answer the question. That only answered the question more.
"Help me find him." I stepped into the apartment.
"Elliot,"
"You know where he is. He has Augustus. You know everything about it."
"Elliot, I can't tell you where he is."
I looked at Gen. "You have to. I have to find my son."
"Elliot I can't."
"Why not?!"
"Because Elliot. This thing between us? This friendship? Can't happen anymore. I'm fixing to leave Earth, go back to Hell, and continue my job. I'm going to break the news to Theo soon and then I'll be gone."
"Can't you at least tell me where my father is? What city? If my son is safe?"
Gen looked down. "No, I'm sorry, I can't."
"Dammit, Gen!" I kicked the leg of her table, making her jump. I rubbed my eyes. "Is my son safe? Is Augustus safe?"
Gen hesitated.
"Yes." She said.
I left.
My phone vibrated tremendously on my end table in the middle of the night, waking me. I pulled my heavy head off of my pillow and checked it. Gen was calling.
"Hello?" my voice cracked, and I wanted water.
"Get up, pack a bag. We're getting your son." She hung up.
I blinked at my phone before those words fully registered.
An hour later Gen was driving us away from the town. I didn't leave a note. I knew I should've, but I didn't.
"Where are we going?"
"I'll tell you when we get there. Sleep. I'll wake you when it's your turn to drive."
I nodded, put in my ear buds and nodded off.
Gen shook my awake. We were at a sketchy gas station on the outskirts of some city. "Fuel up. I'm going to the bathroom and buys some food. Want anything?"
I shook my head and got up to fuel her car.
When she comes back, I ask her where I'm heading. I sit in the driver's seat and start the car. The engine starting up is the loudest thing in the still night.
