"Come on Ashley lets get ready for school" I sighed. I watched as Ashley stretched, rubbing her tear stained eyes. My heart ached for her. We got ready for the day, feeling like we were just going through the motions.
It'd been a couple months since what Rodney did to Ashley. We both can't seem to get over it.
Then, my thoughts flickered-an idea. Almost like a match. If you're not careful it'll blow out-if you handle it with care it might just work! But if you hold onto it too long it'll burn you and you have to start over. Rodney was going to pay.
"Hey Ashley!" A boy, Thomas, whispered to her before class had actually started. "Watch this!" I watched along with a few others as he went over and put a thumbtack on Jason's chair. The teacher walked in.
"Class take out your homework assignments from last night and pass them to the front." Papers shuffled through the classroom. Then, Jason walked in.
"I'm so sorry I'm late please don't make me have detention!" He pleaded to the teacher, looking like he was about to cry. I snorted. We are in high school! The teacher glared him down to his seat and turned back to the board. Dude don't sit down! I said in my head. Ahh, too late. I watched with Ashley and Thomas, along with the few other kids who were listening to Thomas earlier, in slow motion, as Jason sat down right on top of the thumbtack and jump back up, yelping as it pierced right through his skin. He plucked it out and stared at it in horror. I tried to suppress a grin and looked at Ashley who was watching, feeling my heart glow when I heard her laughing. Thomas beamed, proud of his new accomplishment.
"Ashley, detention! You're disrupting the whole class!" Ashley's face went from laughter to shock. I could tell she might start crying since she technically didn't do any wrong and out of embarrassment-also her new hormones..But I'm positively sure that I'm only knew that she was going to cry since, well, I know her so well.
I stood up, straight and tall with a firm look in my eyes.
"Mr.Charles, I'm sorry. I made her laugh by putting a thumbtack on Jason's seat and he sat on top of it. Please don't give her detention." I heard the class whisper and a few girls sigh with dreamy thoughts. I almost started laughing. About half the guys in the class were most likely thinking retard or dude really? You're such a joke. But, a main rule in dating a girl-which every guy should know, but a lot of them are too stupid to realize this-is just to simply let go of pride.
Mr.Charles looked like a weird tomato about to explode. Thomas stood up too. "Actually, it was me. I'm not sure why he's trying to protect me, but I'm the one who did it." He turned to Jason."I'm sorry." He turned to Ashley. "I'm sorry." He turned to me. "I'm sorry."
Everyone's mouths dropped to the floor and then to the one below that. Thomas-the-schools-troublemaker-mastermind, just confessed to a whole classroom. He had let go of his pride.
"Ashley, how have you been feeling lately?" I asked. We were riding back to her house after a long day at school, a glum look on her face.
"I'm-I'm just-" she sighed. "I never thought I'd have my first kid with a guy who I absolutely hate....I-I just wish that I could crawl into a whole and disappear." A tear slid down her face. We stopped in front of her house and got off her skateboard. Ashley plopped down into the porch swing and started sobbing. I felt my heart break into a billion pieces. I sat down next to her and turned my body to hug her, my cheek resting against the top of her head.
"It's okay, I'm sorry this happened.." I whispered, stroking her hair and then rubbing her back, trying desperately to comfort her-to make her heart numbing pain disappear into a thin wisp of smoke.
