I was about halfway through my book when Michael woke up. He rubbed his eyes groggily and I reached over him and grabbed the water off the bedside table. I handed it to him and he sat up slowly and took a few sips. He smiled weakly at me and, his voice still raw, thanked me.
"You don't have to lie here with me beautiful. Go do things. I feel like I'm making you stay here. I promise I'll be okay if you go." He looked earnestly at me.
"I honestly don't mind baby. It's nice to lay in bed and not have to do anything."
"Really?"
"Really."
He smiled and I kissed his forehead.
"Are you ready to eat?"
"I don't know."
"Stay there I have an idea."
"Okay."
Michael lay his head back on the pillow and sighed. I got up and slipped my feet into my slippers before going to the kitchen.
When I returned with my idea Michael's face lit up.
"You got me a lolly pop!"
"I thought it might help your throat sweetie. And I got a lemonade flavour ice lolly so it won't make your tummy worse."
"I love you." He smiled as I handed him the unwrapped lolly.
"Love you too. Now get better soon so we can go Christmas shopping okay?"
"Yay!"
I climbed back onto the bed and sat next to Michael. He put his arm around my shoulders as he sucked on his ice lolly.
He's such a dork.
I rested my head on his shoulder and picked up my book where I'd left off.
"Read to me."
"It's the middle of the book you won't know what's happening." I laughed.
"I don't care. I like listening to you read."
"Okay."
So as the wintry afternoon light shone through the crack in the curtains, the words of The Book Thief circled and comforted the two teenage lovers as they sat snuggled in bed away from the frosty air outside.
Ten minutes after I'd begun reading, the first snowflake fell softly and silently to the ground just like the white hot ash fluttered through the air in The Book Thief. Soon it became a snow storm and we dragged the desk chair to the window and I sat on Michael's lap as we watched the snow and I read to him, the words rolling off my tongue and his smile tickling my neck.
