My mum had cleared everyone out to talk to me, including Dan who had glared at her the whole way out the room. I was now sat up in bed with Oscar in my lap, the nurse had just finished helping me feed him and now it was just as sat on the bed and my mum stood at the end of the hospital bed grasping the metal bar, with white knuckles. We were in silence but her gaze never moved from my face as I smiled down at my baby boy. I started to get the feeling something was about to happen when she cleared her throat.

“How could you be so careless?” she asked making me looking up at the women I hadn’t seen since she left all those years ago. I know I should be the happiest in the world I had just had a baby, but I could feel anger raising in me. I got out of the bed with great effort and pain, I felt even more anger in me when my mum ignored my obvious pain and didn’t help me. My stomach still felt raw and painful. But I didn’t make a sound I shuffled slowly until I was next to Oscar’s coat, I lowered him to mattress carefully laying him down then ignoring the pain once more to bend and kiss his tiny forehead.

Once I had straightened up again I turned to face my mother. “I had a baby with the man I love. I don’t see it as a bad thing” she made a weird coughing sound. “Yes fine that is ok. But you are fifteen!” she all but shouted at me throwing up one of her hands in frustration. “Just because you left your children doesn’t mean I can’t look after mine” She once again turned to me glaring “Don’t you dare turn this on me young lady” she said pointing a threating finger at me. “You weren’t their mum. You have never been there, you can’t tell me off for this, you weren’t there” her glare didn’t falter but I saw a flash of regret cross her eyes before it was once again replaced with anger. “Did he force you?” she asked pointing behind her, were I am sure Dan was passing the corridor outside. “No if anything I made him”

She raising both eyebrows to show she hardly believed what I was saying. “You think just because Dan’s the guy he was the one who wanted to” she shook her head “It’s not that Izzy. Believe me I know girls ask for it as well as guys. But he is two years older than you, he is eighteen an adult. This probable illegal” that stopped me short, it probably was illegal but neither Dan nor I cared we were in love and no one who had saw us together and saw our ages cared. No one but the women stood in front of me.   

“Izzy” she said in a nicer, calmer voice the voice she used to talk to with when I was little. This made me go on guard it was the same tone and voice she had used to tell me she was leaving. “I want you to come with me to Hollywood” I felt my eyes widened at this, she wanted me to move in with her and her actor husband was she insane. “What?” I asked I am sure all my confusion was showing on my face. “Darling, I wanted to take you with me all those years ago. But your father wouldn’t let me. Now I wanted you to come with me and I can help you raise Oscar.” She wasn’t making any sense, Dad had told me when she left that she hadn’t even talked to him before she left she just packed and went. He found out later that she had been cheating on him and was now marrying the guy she had done it with. “Do you mean leave everyone I know and love here?” she nodded looking confused to where I was going to with this argument.

“And what leave Dan here he is Oscar’s father I grew up with one parent I am not letting my son do that to. Do you know how bad it is to know your mother never loved you enough to stay? That she hurt your father so much that I had to help put his heart back together. Do you know that he has only just started dating again? Throughout all these years you have been married to that home wrecker, he hasn’t even looked at women that way, not until he met Katie.” I saw an emotion flash across her eyes as I mentioned Katie, but it was too quick for me to work out what it was and meant.
