Chapter 2 - Meting a Ghost
Atlas dived behind a tree, hoping that whatever the creature he had seen did not see him.
He rubbed his eyes with the palms of his hands.
"I must have hit my head or something. There are no such things as ghosts." he told himself.
He took a deep breath then edged his head around the tree, looking back to the fountain.
They're gone!
He came out from his hiding spot and took a thorough look around the entire fountain.
The boy was real. I couldn't have made that up and they couldn't have just have disappeared into thin air!
He shook the thought of the boy and the apparition out of his head.
"Right, time to get the money, get back to the ship and get everyone away from Earth before the Ridons catch up with us."
He steeled himself and went over to the first moon.
One of the green panels on the moon was bent at one of the corners. Carefully, as not to give anything away to the Ridons should they get there.
He peeled it back and found the small black sack. Inside were the small star cells that he need to power his ship. It was seriously an antique but he didn't have the heart to change his ship, The Cruella, one single bit.
He'd grown up on it. He liked the way it was and that was that.
He put away the cells and closed back the hatch.
He called Lorik on his communicator, "I have them."
"Finally!" Lorik cheered. "Get back here quick, the scanners have the Ridons approaching fast to your location."
"Roger that Lorik. I'm on my way." Atlas said as he spun around. "AAAHHHH!"
The boy, with his wide brown eyes and short hair was staring up at Atlas, but the apparition was not in sight.
Atlas took a breath, and looked to the boy, "Don't you know it's impolite to scare people like that?"
"Don't you know it's rude to intrude on private conversations?" the boy retorted.
Atlas looked at him with his brow raised, "And what private conversations have I intruded on, exactly?"
"Ours." A girl said from behind the boy.
Atlas looked up.
She was pale blue from her long blue hair, to the tattered shirt and jeans she wore, to her bare feet poking from beneath the edge. Even her skin was blue. The only aspects of her that weren't were her pale white eyes.
The only feature that truly registered with Atlas, however, was that she was transparent.
He stepped back, "What are you?"
The boy rolled his eyes, "She's a soul, dummy."
Atlas looked down at the boy, "That isn't exactly polite, y'know."
"Actually, he's pretty much right." The girl said, her soft lilting voice making him look up at her, "And there is definitely such a thing as ghosts. What do you think happens to lost souls?"
Atlas looked back at her and the words halted in his mouth. It took him a good deal of time before he got out, "What is going on?"
The girl put her hands to her hips, "You realize if you persist on calling yourself mentally deranged, you won't hear where you can get the rest of those star cells."
