Sorry to Scare You

“Hey Dean, can I...can I talk to you about something?” I ask, sitting down in the chair next to him in the bunker library.

He shuts the laptop, then takes a swig of beer, turning to me, saying, “Anything to get me out of researching for Sammy.”
I pout, and he adds, awkwardly, “And because I love you, of course.”
We stare at each other for a moment, then I smile sheepishly, stuttering, “Have you...um...have you ever…”
He turns his body to me, all signs of him not paying attention to me have disappeared, as he places his hands on my knees as a comforting gesture, saying, “Princess, you can tell me anything...It’s okay…”
I say, quietly, “It’s hard to ask.”
His eyebrows knit together beautifully, then a moment later, he whispers, “If you’re going to ask if I...use protection...babygirl, I do. I’d never lie about th-wait...are you…?” He’d gotten a tad bit louder at the end of his sentence, because he must’ve realized.
I nod slightly, and his eyes widen a little, glancing down at my stomach.
“Oh...I...um...I’m...sorry…”, he stutters out.
Now it’s my turn to look confused. Why’s he apologizing? Way to make it awkward, Dean, seriously!
He spills out, his eyes tearing up with every word, “I'm sorry Als, I should’ve been paying attention. I just...you looked so beautiful, and I wanted you so badly, I just...I forgot it...in...the moment…”
He’s falling apart right in front of my eyes, and I honestly don’t know what to do. This doesn’t normally happen. It scares me to see him like this. I’m in tears just watching him.
He leans forward, putting his head in his hands on my lap, whispering, “The truth is...Als, I want kids...I do...it was always one of my dreams, though I never told anyone. I also never thought I’d find the right girl, either...to have and raise them with...and...the first time I saw you,” he looks up at me in tears, “I thought ‘her. I have to have her. She’s...perfect.’ And, to which no surprise to much of anyone, you fell...” He trails off, gazing at me as if he doesn’t know how I feel about him.
I giggle, cupping his face gently, “I did fall in love with you.” He smiles softly in relief, and I continue, “I fell in love with a truly amazing guy who protects me no matter what could happen to him, and who would make an awesome dad, believe me, he would! But...also…”
I blink, and look him directly in the eyes, saying, “Deanie, baby, look at me. I know you probably can’t see that well, but look anyway...this is important.”
His eyes meet mine, him holding my hands against his face (loosely), and I say, “You know...you know how I feel about your father...but I just want you to remember that...you are not him. You aren’t raising our baby by yourself. Some things he taught you may be okay, but...it’s not his child. Don’t feel like you have to be like him. This is our child, not his. We’ll teach them the good and the bad, but we’ll stick together. You’re not pushing me or the baby away, just because you may think you’re dangerous. I’m with you every step of the way, and...I know we’re not married but…’til death do us part’, you know? And, actual death, like you stay dead.”
Dean looks like he spaced out, but he says, with a small smile, “Would you-uh...would you wanna do that?”
I ask, confused, “What? See you die? Um, no thanks! And if it’s my decision, I’ll drag you out of the grave myself, and keep you young. I know how to do that, but”
He chuckles, saying, “No, no, no, not that! Well, thank you actually, but I meant...would you...maybe...wanna’...get married?”
I blink a few times, then stutter, “D-did you just...i-is this r-really...happening?”
He takes something out of his pocket, and holds it in front of me, replying, “Hell yeah it is!”
After a moment of silence, Dean adds awkwardly, “I would do this properly, but...you know...bad knees…”
I giggle, replying, “Oh I know, me too!”
He smirks, saying, “Well, that never stopped you.”
I roll my eyes, and smack his arm playfully, saying, “Oh, shut it!”
He says, “So uh...is that a yes then?”
I realize what he’s asking, and reply, “Oh, sorry, I got sidetracked by you...saying...that, but...yeah, it’s definitely a yes, Dean.”
