Chapter 3

October- Junior

[Niall’s POV]

“So they’re a thing now?” I asked as Liam continued to work on his history paper at my desk.

“Yep! Honestly, I’ve never seen Zayn happier to be with someone.”

“Well, I’m happy for Zayn! Perrie seems happy as well! I can’t believe they went out for a week and didn’t tell anyone though.”

“Eh, he said it was because she was afraid the Lord would send her a message and warn her that this was the wrong path and that she shouldn’t be getting married. However, Zayn says she feels as though she was supposed to be waiting for him so I guess that’s a good thing,” Liam said offhandedly.

I looked over at Liam who wasn’t looking over at me, but rather still immersed in his work, and asked, “You don’t believe in God do you Liam?”

“Of course I do Ni. It’s more the fact I think we have two different versions of God.”

“What do you mean?”

Liam sighed before turning to finally face me and began to speak. “You see, you’re what I like to call a literalist, whereas I am a modernist.”

“What do you mean by that?” I sat up on my bed and waited Liam to continue his explanation.

“Well, you follow majority, if not all the rules of the bible correct?”

“Well of course. You’re supposed to in order to go to heaven. We have to try and be like Jesus every day.”

“Right. And you literally follow each word of the bible. Whereas there are people, like myself, who don’t take it so literal. I believe in God, but I think of him as spiritual entity.”

I sat there and contemplated over what Liam actually said. I mean, I was glad he was beginning to open with me, but what he thought was, well, wrong.

“What’s that face for?” Liam said as he came over and sat next to me.

“What face?”

“You’re doing the face when you’re torn between something. So what is it? It’s obviously about something I said.”

I sighed before opening up to Liam. “Look, I mean, your beliefs are just a bit, skewed. God isn’t a spiritual entity. He is our father who looks over us. And the bible is pretty much the rules of religion. How could you not, I mean, I just, urgh!” I tugged at my hair as Liam just smirked a bit at me. That only made me more frustrated. I sneered at him and he chuckled.

“You’re so sheltered,” Liam said as he shook his head.

“I am not!” I jumped up in front of Liam and crossed my arms over my chest.

“Niall, you can’t accept the fact I’m not like you or any of your friends!” Liam spat at me.

“Well it’s not my fault you’re wrong!”

“So having a difference of opinion makes me wrong?”

“In this case, yes!”

Liam’s stare softened before he stood up and began to gather his things from around the room.

“Where are you going?” I asked as he zipped up his backpack.

“Home Niall. Isn’t it obvious?”

“Why?”

Liam whipped around at me with an angry look etched on his face. However, his eyes looked so sad. I knew it was my fault that they looked so broken, but it couldn’t have been all me, right?
