It had been a while since Aelyn had felt nervous. She remembered how much she hated the feeling. The nauseating butterflies that messed up her insides. It distracted her from the task up ahead. She had never felt nervous when it came to herself. This was a first. The nerves usually turned up when someone she cared about was in danger. That's why she tried to keep everyone at arms length.
Aelyn was reckless when it came to herself. She had gotten used to be the one who provides protection. She knew she had to be the one to take care of her family the moment Isamu Hitsugaya betrayed them. That man, he had taken more than just her trust when he did so.
The white, silky curtain of hair covered Aelyn's face as she looked down at her black boots. Before the mutant had awakened, Helena had cleaned and brushed her hair. Her skin was scrubbed and moisturised until it shone. She also had risen Aelyn in black attire.
Aelyn had almost laughed at her appearance. The woman had magic fingers, she thought. Her skin looked less grey, her hair less dull and the clothes covered up any signs of starvation. As if it never happened.
But the marks on her skin said otherwise.
She looked like she was dressed up for her own funeral. Ironic, knowing that if Helena had not warned her, she might as well have walked straight into the arms of death.
Aelyn leaned her head back against the wall as she hooked her arms around her legs, bringing them closer to her chest. She felt the blade of one of her knifes slightly cut her skin. She didn't mind it too much. She knew that without her knifes she could save herself just fine, but the knifes gave her reassurance. Some sense of security. Safety.
She had them carefully hidden. A few she had slipped in the insides of her boots, while the rest was tucked at the waist of her pants. The cold metal cooling off the skin at her lower back.
It had taken them hours to come and get her, but now she heard the faint, in-sync footsteps that could only belong to Safers. It was time.
For the first time the door to her left opened up for a second time in a day. The young guard had been standing watch this time. He scanned his card, then his right hand and the glass door slid open with a sigh.
Beyond the door Enrico Martinez stepped in sight. He leaned his wrists on his rifle, that was hanging from his shoulders, before leaning forward.
"Well well, who would have thought there would be a princess under all that dirt?" he mocked.
Aelyn cocked her head to her left to look at him. Oh, how she would have loved to punch his jaw.
"Not as much as a princess as you are, Enrico. The only thing that's missing is a pretty dress. You would fit right in with the royals. You've got the spirit."
Although he had balled his fists at her words, non of them met her cheek. That's a first, she thought amused. He gained some self control over the months. Or maybe it was just because he felt enough satisfaction knowing she would be dead soon.
