"Shocker that I find you here, all alone. Maybe I should accompany you? Yes, I think I will," were the first words that come out of my mouth when I see Alex sitting by himself at the very back of the classroom.
I make my way through the classroom, making a beeline towards the closest seat available to Alex. I sit next to him just to annoy him but he doesn't hear nor notice me at first so I yell near his ear where his ear bud was tightly wedged in,
"Yo, Rodriguez!"
"Oh, it's you again, Captain Clumsy," was Alexs' only response to my calling.
"Ah, yes the love of your dreams has come to save you from being a loner with no friends at all whatsoever," I say, mustering up the most sarcastic tone I ever had.
"Leave me be, Alma, I like not being annoyed by little girls like you," Alex grumbles, with the coldest glare intended just for me.
"Well, Mr. Grumpypants, it's your lucky day cause I'm gonna stay right here, plus, I rather enjoy the view don't ya think? Also because you're new and all, it's my responsibility to annoy the tamales out of you," I reply, the fakest smile plastered on my face to bother him.
Alex begins to get up to change his seat, I assume. But before he can even move his things to a different seat, Ms. Ficklemann scolds him saying,
"Young man, please be seated next to Alma and don't even think about moving because, ladies and gentlemen, these seats will be your seats for the rest of your Junior year."
Alex sits back down next to me with a groan. I hadn't pegged him to actually listen the teacher. Hmph, I guess I only receive surprises from him. Oh well, time to scheme my oh so wonderful plan to annoy him for as much and as long as possible.
"I guess you're stuck with little old me," I say, putting a fist in my mouth to muffle my laughter.
"Ha, ha. You're so hilarious, you should totally be my personal clown!" he says, with a sarcastic voice that I had never thought I'd get to hear, but glad I had the pleasure to.
Ms. Ficklemann then begins her introduction to the lesson.
"This year we're learning how The Commonwealth came to be," was how she started off. I end up zoning out, thinking back to when my dad told me the exact same story,
"Dad, can you tell me what happened to all the other places in the world?" I said, holding my stuffed bunny to my chest on my fifth birthday.
Dad was showing me the map of the world before The Nuclear Wars, the title of the map was called The United States of America. I had seen it before but I had always wondered why there was now only one place with human life which was here, at The Commonwealth. He explained to me,
"Well, sweetheart, some bad people wanted to be in charge of more places but the good people didn't want the bad people to have them so the bad people asked for a war which we know as The Nuclear War. Well, the good people lost because they didn't want to kill more people than had already died from The Sickness. But the land was already destroyed except for this part, right here. Now we know it as The Commonwealth and the bad people created a government called The Brotherhood in which we work together to keep The Commonwealth sanitized, safe, and soundless."
I had never understood what Dad had meant by "soundless" but as I grew older and Dad had died a few months later I began to realize that maybe he broke the rules and that's what got him killed but I'll never know.I come out of my daze when the bell rings, signaling the end of the block. I cram all of my notebooks into my satchel and start walking towards the door when I hear Alex call my name. Hmm, I thought he already left, I wonder what he wants.
"I just want to warn you, be careful and be ready. Expect the unexpected," he says with an emotion in his eyes that I can't point out.
He then sprints out of the classroom to leave me thinking as to what he meant. Expect the unexpected? And how did he know my name in the first place?
