"Wake up, sleepyhead."
I heard a sweet, calm voice whisper in my ear.
"10 more minutes, Mom," I grumbled out as clearly as I possibly could while being half asleep.
Today was one of those rare days in which I got to see Mom and hang out with her before I headed to school and didn't see her for another month or so.
"Come on, sweeheart. You don't want to be late do you?"
"If it means I get to sleep in then so be it."
"Be downstairs in 10 and I'll brew some coffee for you. How does that sound?"
I weighed my options out in my mind. Should I stay or should I go? I giggled to myself as I realize those were the lyrics to one of my favorite songs.
"What's so funny?" I heard Mom whispered confusingly.
"Nothing, Mom. But I guess I could get up and go to a miserable place called school," I rolled my eyes, a smiled plastered on my face.
"Okay."
I got out of my warm cozy bed and padded my way along the cold metal floor, goosebumps coming up along my arms and legs. I quickly threw on something comfortable which, in my case, was a pair of sweats and a short sleeved t shirt. I put on some fuzzy socks to warm my feet up and protect them from the freezing floor.
I go down the hall, my hand touching the wall to help me not slip. I go down the stairs, gripping the railing. I make it to the kitchen successfully and run to my mom like Bambi on ice. She caught me before my butt touched the floor and helped me to a stool.
Our kitchen was almost exactly like Alex's but it wasn't always like this. We used to have art pieces in almost every room now the walls are bare, the paintings leaving the plastic like walls along with Dad.
Mom placed a mug full to the brim of coffee in front of me along with a croissant. I thanked her then ate my breakfast swiftly before changing my socks for a pair of plain black ones and put on some vintage Adida chanclas to finish my outfit off.
I heard the entrance ding, pointing out that someone was at the door. I sprinted out and saw Alex through the door. I placed my palm on the touch screen and the door slid open, revealing a very nervous Alex on our door step.
"Hey, I was wondering if um you would like to uh walk together?" Alex said while scratching the back of his head in nervousness.
"Um sure let me just get my satchel. Uh, you can come inside if you'd like."
I notified my mom that we had a guest before I rushed to my room where my satchel was. Before I made my way to the kitchen, pausing in the hall, I heard whispering. The whisperer sounded angry at the person they were yelling at but I couldn't tell what they were saying until I was at the top of the stairwell.
"What are you doing here, Alex!?"
"I live next door and I go to the same school as Alma! What do you expect?"
"You aren't supposed to talk to her or associate with her in any way. You know the rules."
"Yeah, but I don't care. We were best friends then and I loved her. I want to rekindle that with her."
"You can't. I won't let you."
"But Luke is here too! And what about her bestfriends, Cris and Jo!?"
"I will speak to Luke and as for Cris and Jo, they have been bestfriends for a long time and that is their story. They don't remember and they never will. Do you understand me?"
