My eyes fluttered open only to be greeted by a beam of light that was shining through the window. It gently touched the walls with its vibrant colors and illuminated my usually dim room.

What is that? What could possibly make so much light? I was about to investigate the strange beam when I heard hushed voices coming from the other side of my bedroom door. I shut my eyes and focused on using my wolf's hearing to listen in on the conversation.

'He can't keep sleeping through the day and waking at night!' Julian spoke

'Why not!?' My mother exclaimed.

"It's too dangerous! He almost got killed last night! And who knows.. if he keeps wandering around at night he just might. What he needs is to be awake with the other wolves and he must go to training.' Julian's voice was firm, His wolf seemed to be breaking through slightly.

'No! He's too fragile for that and the other kids will make fun of him! I don't want him to have to endure the bullying. Its hard enough on those kids who aren't like him. Can you imagine what they will treat him like!?' My mother's voice broke my heart. I whimpered softly at the pain I felt.

'Would you rather him get killed from walking around at night or have him be awake and be able to defend himself in case of an attack? He's almost 18 for Christ sake! He will be able to find his mate soon, but before that he needs to have some friends. You've been keeping him from our society for far too long. It's time to let him live.' I felt comforted by the tone of Julians voice.. I hope my mother felt the same.

I heard stifled crying from my mother 'I though I was doing good by protecting him..' She cried.

I quickly went back to human hearing. Listening to your mother cry can really break your heart. I whimpered softly before scooting off my bed and walking toward the strange beam of light that shown through the window.

The bright light was so fascinating. Small little specks danced and swirled around in the light. What is it? I asked myself as I crept forward. I slowly lifted my hand toward it. Should I touch it? It might be dangerous... I glanced toward the walls, the light lit up the wall making the white shine.

I squeezed my eyes shut and pushed my hand forward. I awaited a burning sensation but it never came, instead I felt a warmth spread over my fingers and down the palm of my hand. I opened my eyes in shock and saw that my hand had pierced the light. I moved it around and giggled when I saw that the light only hit one side. As I continued to move my hand, I noticed something move out of the corner of my eye. Panic set in as I slowly turned my head to the wall only to be greeted by a dark colored creature on the wall. I squealed loudly.

'Heru are you okay!?' Julian asked as he and my mother burst through the door.

I stared at them with wide eyes. 'There's a monster on the wall..' I whispered, fearing it would hear me.

Julian glanced at where my hand was and then toward the wall. He laughed softly before standing on the other side of the light.

'Heru.. It's not scary it's simply a shadow caused by your hand.. Watch.' Julian Lifted his hand into the light. 'Now when I move my hand so will the shadow.' Julian began moving his hand around. I glanced back and forth between the wall and his hand. Bother where moving at the same time. When Julian pulled his hand away the shadow disappeared. A giggle escaped my lips as I watched this new thing before me. I quickly began moving my hand, watching the wall as I did so.

'What is this light called?' I asked as I continued to play with the light.

My mother walked forward, tears glistening in her pale blue eyes. 'It's called sunlight dear' A warm smile was upon her face.

'Can I walk in it?" I asked

'Of course you can Heru' She replied 'Its not dangerous'

I bit my lip nervously before shutting my eyes and slowly stepping forward. The warmth that I felt on my hand was now covering my whole body. I felt as though I was under the warm silks that covered my bed. As I opened my eyes the sunlight filled my vision. I gasped loudly and quickly covered my eyes with my hands.

'It will take a moment for your eyes to adjust to the light Heru.' My mother said. 'Heru I need to speak with you about something.. Something very important.'

I stepped out of the light and uncovered my eyes. 'What is it mother?' She turned toward Julian with worry etched into her features. He gave her a small nod.

'You may want to take a seat.. It will be a lot to take in.'

I nodded my head before walking over to my bed and taking a seat. My heart was racing as I watched my mother walk over toward me. The bed dipped slightly as she sat down, an arm was draped over my shoulder.

'Promise me that you won't hate me after I tell you?' My mother asked, a slight tremor in her voice.

'I could never hate you Mamma. I love you and nothing you say will change that.'

'I don't know.. this might..' She took a deep breath. My nerves spiked at the fear of what she was going to say and having heard some of the conversation between her and Julian.. It might not be something I like.

"I always thought that I was doing the right thing Heru. Your wolf.. is different from others.. when you first shifted it caused concern among the pack and I grew worried about what you would face growing up in school so I changed when you would wake. Whenever you're out and about.. everyone else is sleeping. You know Julian because he is apart of the night guard. I was so afraid you would get bullied for being different and I couldn't bare letting that happen.."

I fought back the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes. My hands were gripping the silk sheets of my bed and I found myself glaring at the floor.

"I had to keep you away from everyone.. it was for your well being."
