"Hey mom! I'm home!" I yelled before darting up the stairs. I quickly ran into my room and shut the door before heading over to the window. The sky was an angry grey and the clouds rolled with the blowing wind. I peered around trying to spot what could be bothering Julian. The scenery was quiet save for a few people who were still milling about. I sighed and sat on the ground, resting my head on the windowsill. The soft sound of rain and the gloomy sky was slowly lulling me to sleep. Would it be so wrong to rest my eyes for a bit? Just as they were sliding shut I saw two guards run into view. Their fur was slick from the rain and their large ears were trained forward. A third one came bounding into view a moment later. It was Julian.
The sleep I was feeling vanished with their tracks as my full attention was on them. Julian was larger than the other two but they all seemed to match in dominance. Julian barked toward the two guards and they both ran off toward the homes. Julian watched till they were out of sight before running toward the market place.. he's probably going to the pack house.
I growled in frustration of what was going on. I knew he was keeping something from me.. Does it have to do with the rouges from the other day? We rarely have problems here.. at least not at night from what I can remember. I slouched down against the wall and drew up my knees. I scanned my room trying to think of something to do but I kept drawing a blank. Maybe I can go and see if they need help? It feels wrong to sit inside and do nothing.
That seems like a bad idea.. My wolf tusked.
I ignored him and jumped to my feet. Yes! I'll go and help out Julian! I'm not a scared little wolf.. I can be brave! I glanced out the window one last time before heading back downstairs.
"Ma! I'm heading out for a bit!" I yelled.
"You just got back not even ten minutes ago. You don't need to go back out again, especially not in this weather." My mother stood by the front door with her arms crossed.
"I can put on a jacket, I'll be fine." I pleaded
She shook her head. "No. You're staying in. Go rest up you have to be exhausted, especially with the time change." She gestured to the stairs.
Crap! Now what? I begrudgingly turned around and went back to my room. I don't want to stay inside. I may have been tired a few moments ago but my curiosity is getting the best of me and I can no longer stay hidden away inside.
You should really just listen to your mother Heru..
I can't. I need to know whats going on. I replied.
I carefully shut my door before turning the lock. Okay.. plan B. Now what? I looked around my room trying to think of a way to get out of the house. My eyes faltered on the window. That could work...
I ran over to the window and unlocked it. Wait.. she'll be able to hear this. Fuck! Now what!? Maybe I can knock something over and open the window at the same time. That should hide it right?
I glanced around my room looking for some of my text books. I grabbed two large ones and brought them back over to the window before balancing them on one hand. I placed my free one on the window and got into a position so I could open it.
Please work...
I took a deep breath and dropped the books. The cloud bang resonated through the room and allowed me a moment to push open the window.
"Heru!? Are you alright!?" My mothers muffled voice sounded.
"Yes ma! Just dropped one of my books!"
I paused for a moment and waited for a response but none came. Did this seriously just work?
I made quick work and peered outside the window. Thats a far drop.. maybe this is a very stupid idea..
No. I made it this far.. I'm not giving up.
This far isn't that much Heru.. My wolf laughed
Its far for me okay!
I looked out the window and began formulating a plan. Theres a small roofing out crop just below this window. I could try and land on that then just drop down from there. Okay. I can do this. No ones around so I'm good to go...
I threw a leg over the windowsill before pausing and taking in a deep breath. I swung the other leg over so I was leaning into my room with my legs hanging out. Okay.. slowly inch your way out and drop onto the roof.. I carefully wiggled further out the window. Sweat began forming on my brow as I concentrated on not dying.
I was now hanging by my hands outside the window and I couldnt feel the roof beneath me. I have to look like a complete idiot right now.
Okay.. just take the chance and drop down.. it couldn't have moved so we should be fine.
I let go of my hands and quickly touched down onto the roof. But luck was not on my side. My feet slipped from the rain and I fell down. My face hit the shingles before I slid off and onto the hard ground below. The air was knocked from my lungs and I found myself clawing at the ground as I tried to find my breath.
I regained control of my lungs in a few short moments. The sweet air had me gasping to cover for those lost moments. I remained lying on the ground, sprawled out on the dirt and sand as I thought over what just occurred. I brushed a hand across my face and saw blood staining my fingers.
Great.
I pushed myself up and groaned at the pain in my back from the fall. I should have known it could have been slippery.
The clouds dropped small pellets of rain onto my skin as I pushed up off the ground and leaned against the side of the house. I really hope whatever damage is done to my face can be some what concealed. I began walking off in the direction of the market place while occasionally going to touch at whatever wound plagued my poor face.
I walked along through the different pathways and alleys, taking a nice stroll rather than rushing to whatever is happening near the pack house. I felt a chill creep up my spine as I ducked between two houses. I paused for a moment and glanced behind me. There was nothing there, not an animal nor a person. I shrugged it off and continued walking, I was nearing the pack house now but my unease was growing. This was a terrible idea. Why am I trying to prove myself now of all times? I smacked a hand against my forehead and groaned in frustration and pain. I need to hurry. I shouldn't be out here right now and.. when I got home last I could have sworn I was being followed.
I quickened my pace until I was practically running through the streets. I saw the opening up ahead with the covered carts and shops of the marketplace.
Wait? Whats that!?
I heard paws slapping the ground behind me. Panic filled my being as I felt myself slip into fight or flight. I pushed myself to run faster as I heard the sound gain on me from behind.
"Julian!" I screeched as I ran into the center of the market place. Two guards came bolting in from beyond the pack house and Julian came running from inside.
"Heru!? Why aren't you home?!"
I ignored his words and ran into his arms. I quickly wrapped my arms around him and sobbed against his chest.
"There.. I was being.." I tried to take a shaky breath before looking toward where I came from. Theres nothing there?
I pushed away from Julian and ran back to the market place.
"I was.. someone was chasing me!" I looked around frantically at the empty space before me.
"Heru.. calm down." Julian whispered low.
"Wait no.. I swear!" I spun around to face him. " I heard something.. I was being chased!"
"Heru. You need to rest. You're not used to this change.. let me take you home."
I backed up slightly feeling a bit taken back.
"What did you do to cut up your face like that?" Julian reached a hand out and touched one of the cuts. I hissed at the pain and smacked his hand away. He let out a sigh.
"I jumped out a window." I crossed my arms before turning around and heading back to my home. Julian followed close behind.
