Chapter 6: Dread

Maia's POV

The caliginous atmosphere around me seemed to get thinner, but it was still present. It was like fog- a fog that couldn't be lifted. After the period of time in which I was here, everything seemed to rip and break apart.

I thought about its meaning.

Was I somehow being freed from this death of mine?

Was I being brought back to reality?

Some joy bubbled inside of me at the thought.

Suddenly, there was soft light in front of me. At first, it was just a sliver of light, but soon grew so big that it swallowed me up, staring into whiteness.

"Maia," a deep voice boomed...

"You are afraid. You are afraid because you do not know your destiny... or rather, you have forgotten your destiny."

Destiny?

I was dead.

Nothing could ever change that.

My friends were okay.

That was all I needed to know.

I could not talk. I could not answer to this voice.

"You're too young to know, but it's almost time. In order for your purpose to be fulfilled, you must be alive."

How could that be?

I was practically dead. I cannot change that no matter what.

"Your friends will know. They will bring you back to Earth. And when they do, you shall remember. I promise. Stay patient."

If only I could speak, I would have argued... to tell the voice that it was impossible.

But even so, maybe it was right.

In a world where people were crimson, monsters existed, paintings took you places you never thought existed, and simulations killed you, maybe it really was possible.

Maybe it really was possible.

The light faded and I was back in the darkness. I was so confused...
