Noel and Harry are six.

"Mommy, do we have to go here? I wanted to stay home, and bake cookies with you and Daddy," Noel pouted at her mother as they were walking to the front of an unfamiliar home. She clearly did not want to be at the place that they were. She wanted to be at home by the fireplace and open gifts, as she drank hot chocolate. It was a family tradition that she has become accustomed to doing each and every holiday season ever since she could remember. And breaking that tradition was something that she was not quite fond of.

"Yes, and I'm sorry sweetie that we had to change plans for this Christmas. But at least you'll be able to make a new friend tonight," her mother told her, trying to soothe Noel's mood about the sudden change in things.

Her eyes brightened like a million stars shining at once. "Really?" she asked eagerly. Her father nodded, chuckling at her reaction. She ran to the door and politely knocked two times (because two was her lucky number) while waiting for an answer.

Suddenly, a very pretty woman opened the door. "Jane! Devin! It's been ages!" Her mom, dad, and the stranger-lady went into a group hug until she finally faced the small and innocent Noel. Her big, brown eyes wanted to make Anne squirm in excitement just by seeing the little girl for the very first time. "And what's your name?" she asked with a smile.

"I'm Noel!" she responded excitedly with a toothy grin. "What's your name? You're really pretty too."

Everybody started laughing at how cute she was. "You can call me Aunt Anne. Nice to meet you! Do you wanna meet that friend that your mom kept mentioning to you?" Noel nodded with all of the excitement that she had. Anne led her to a big living room filled with nice furniture and Christmas decorations, causing Noel to spin a 360 degree circle. "Harry, we have guests. Meet Noel. She just moved her, so be nice, okay?"

A small boy hopped off of his spot on the couch and ran over to the new girl. "Hi! I'm Harry. I'm six and I like cats." He extended his hand for Noel to shake, which she gladly took and shook.

"Um, hi! Uh, my name is Noel. I'm six too and I also like cats. But I like dogs too." Harry kept shaking her hand and smiled even brighter with each moment passing.

"Want to do this puzzle with me and draw while the adults talk about work?" Harry asked her, hoping that she would say yes. "Trust me, it's really, really, really boring," he whispered to her in close proximity. She graciously took his offer, already taking a liking to the nice brown-haired boy.

They immediately hit it off. While attempting to piece together a cat puzzle and drawing Christmas trees, Noel and Harry spoke about the oddest topics during the time they spent together. It ranged from why the sea was filled with salt water due to misunderstood sharks to what their favorite food was.

"You're really nice and I like you. Can we be friends?"

Noel nodded while in the middle of coloring her Christmas tree lights. "That sounds pretty nice, so sure." She smiled and continued coloring. The rest of the time, she and Harry were arguing over how she was a better artist than him.

"But your's has better shape and color! Mine is just plain!" Harry pouted.

"Nuh uh! Your's is good too!" Noel countered back.

"Is not!"

"Is too!"

"Noel! Harry! It's time to open presents now!" Anne called.

"Presents!" both children exclaimed in unison.

They sat down together with linked arms as their parents were on both sides of them. "You'll open your presents after the adults and big kids, okay?" They pouted, but chose to be quiet. As the adults opened their countless boxes of gifts, Noel and Harry patiently waited their turn together.

In a hypothetical situation, if the lights went out in the very room they were sitting in, their smiles would become the new light source.

Author's Note - December 3, 2016

Hey guys! Here's the very first chapter of The Christmas Journals! For the sake of each chapter ranging around 500-800 words, I've decided to split each of them into multiple parts: usually three but rarely four.

Well, that's basically all that I've got. Now let the new adventures begin. :)
