I walked along my poorly lit street after my long shift at work, I had gotten off the bus at the bus stop a few metres back, just a short distance from my home. My tired eyes had struggled to stay open in the duration of the bus journey, the only thing that kept me awake was a crying baby a few seats behind me. It was seven o'clock, I had just caught the last bus of the day that goes to my street and this morning, I had caught the first bus that comes to my street. I had just finished my usual 12 hour shift which I had just done 7 days straight due to sickness of staff, this time of year was always short and I was always the one everyone came to when they needed cover, I just didn't have the heart to say no. I knew I was a door mat and that made everything worse.

"Oh hey Ash, how was work?" Michael greeted me as I walked through the front door of our home. I shrugged in response, work was work.

"I need to talk to you about something" he told me as I slung my jacket over the back of our kitchen chair.

"What's that?" I asked, opening the fridge and routing through the many left over take away cartons in there. Michael and I were not the most domesticated people in the world and it showed through the state our house was in most of the time, we only ever really cleaned up properly when we knew our parents were coming over.

"Well, my friend needed a place to stay and I said they could stay here for a while," He started and I looked over at him, taking a sip from a water bottle, waiting for him to continue.

"Her parents have kicked her out and I couldn't see her on the streets," He explained, frowning slightly, "Just until she finds her feet."

I wasn't too happy about having someone else moving in, I liked the way Michael and I had settled into our house and the arrangement we had, adding another person would just disrupt that. I wasn't one to like change or new people for that matter, I had always felt uncomfortable round strangers and the thought of having one living under the same roof as me really unsettled me. But as usual, I pushed my own feelings aside and didn't say how I really felt.

"Sure," I pushed out a smile and went back to trying to find something to eat.

"Are you sure? You don't want to know anything about her or why her parents kicked her out?" He sounded surprised and I really did want to know but truth be told, I was afraid to ask.

"If she's your friend Michael then I'm sure she's great." I wasn't lying completely, I trusted Michael's judgement but like I said before, I don't like new people and I wanted to know everything about this girl but right now, I was too tired to ask.

"Okay, that's great! She's at another mate's tonight but they only said she can stay one night so I'll ring her and tell her," He grinned, pulling his phone from his pocket and started scrolling through it. I pushed out another fake smile and watched him jog up the stairs with his phone to his ear. I let out a loud sigh once I heard his bedroom door shut, who knows what tomorrow will bring.
