Chapter 9: The hunt

Dani's prov

The cool rain was falling all around us as we walked through the forest. I lifted my muzzle to the sky watching the lightning scrape against the dark sky and instead of being scared I watched in awe as I heard it crack against the sky. I was already soaked to the bone and probably looked half my size as I watched the bright stars above settle in the sky. They looked so bright out here, everything did. I heard Colton's heavy breathing behind me, but I paid no attention while I kept my eyes toward the sky in the pouring rain.

His deep breaths turned into growls until he nipped at my tail making my whip my head toward him equally annoyed. He glowered at me before shaking his head and gestured with his head toward  the scent of prey in the air while giving me a pointed look. I playfully tackled him before nipping him on the neck for pay back before  going in the other direction following the scent. I could hear him give me an unappreciative growl behind me making me smile to myself. I stayed low and followed the scent quickly before the rain washed every trace of it away.

I slinked behind trees as my soft bright golden yellow fur changed to a dull soggy light brown color from the rain helping me blend into the dreary landscape. My yellow eyes could see details from faraway to right in front of me and soon were glued to my target. I watched the young deer nibble on the darkened grass completely unaware of my presence. I silently circled the young clueless deer instantly remembering when I watched them as a human in the spring and summer. They always looked so peaceful, but right now every cell in my body was screaming to kill.

I effortlessly climbed on to a small hill just over looking the small deer and silently watched as it ate in the middle of the pouring rain, what I should be doing right now, something deep inside of me reminded me. I heard Colton's impatient low growl drawing not only my attention, but my prize's as well. The deer's head popped up and its ears swiveled around trying to asses the danger around him. The deer moved his head in my direction and although he couldn't see me I saw the fear in its eyes. Making me remember when I was attacked and the fear that pumped in my veins. I caught its scent and my mouth started to water making me feel sick.

I jumped into the clearing giving the deer time to scamper away to freedom and it shot off like a bullet while I turned to where Colton was hiding ready to take his wrath. His once low growl turned furious and earth-shatteringly loud probably scarring every scrap of prey back into their homes for the next week. He stood tall telling me to submit, but I held my ground and even though I was a new wolf and a good head smaller than him I looked up to him challenging.

I could've sworn I saw him smile wolfishly, but a second later it was gone and we started to circle each other closely ready for the fight. I dug my claws into the wet earth and let loose a playful growl as I eyed Colton's black wolf. His midnight black pelt let him effortlessly blend into the darkness surrounding us and without my newfound scenes I probably would have never seen the giant beast in front of me. An unknown emotion washed over me suddenly giving me courage.

I looked him dead in his silver eyes as I changed from my beautiful wolf body to my scarred human one. I hissed when the ice cold rain pelted my bare skin, but soon grew used to the temperature while keeping eye contact with Colton and staying rooted to the spot. As I watched his silver depths I almost felt numb to our surroundings only focusing on him and that unknown emotion poured over me again as I stood in front of him.

"Cole, I know you would never hurt me, so fighting would be pointless." I whispered as I stood in front of him completely naked, but unaffected by his gaze although his eyes are the only ones to ever see my bare body besides the doctors who sewed me back up after my attack. While my eyes never wavered from his silver ones his greedly washed over me changing from lust, pain, anger, sadness, respect, and back again in an endless circle. I knew he could see every scar, burn, scratch, bruise, and fracture with his silver eyes, but for some unknown reason I trusted this male more than any human I've ever met in my life.
