Chapter 5: The Stranger
Mattie's prov
Something cold on my side jolted me awake my body tried to sit up but something restrained me from moving an inch. My gaze shifted from the peeling blue wall paper to the stranger who had found me and my guard instantly went up as numbness filled my veins something I had learned over the years. I swiftly looked over his profile assessing his threat level before noticing the stark differences between him and the man in the pictures I had missed in my hazy state.
Where Peter had dark green eyes the stranger had bright blue orbs, instead of the man in front of me's striking black locks it looked like Peter had chocolate curls from the picture, and the stranger had softer features than Peter's sharp cheekbones except for the scar on the stranger's right side just below his eye where Peter had smooth skin. I cocked my head to the side wondering what he was doing as I looked at his focused expression before my eyes snapped down to his arm. His muscular tanned arm went all the way across my body and was holding me down captive to the bed while his eyes were glued to my throbbing injured side.
Curiosity got the best of me as my hazel eyes followed his lead and peered down at my torn up side. I gasped at my ripped up flesh before I could stop myself and turned my head catching the stranger's sparkling blue eye. He smiled down at me.
"So who did you piss off this time?" His smooth voice broke the silence while a joking smile coated his lips.
"Excuse me?" I questioned him not understanding how he could joke around when my side looks like something out of a horror movie. His calculating gaze swept over my side again before he looked back at my face.
"Did you fight a pack of rogue pups or something? You're healing very slowly for some reason." He said in a confused voice before returning his gaze to my side as a frown started to tug on his lips.
"What are you talking about? I have no idea what a 'rogue' is but I was in the woods and a wolf cub attacked me, thats all I know." I responded just realizing how pathetic that sounded while he just blankly stared at me like I had three heads.
"What do you mean a wolf just attacked you?" he asked suddenly outraged. A surge of protectiveness poured over me as I remembered the small beautiful wolves.
"It wasn't their fault - I was the one out in the woods -in the middle of the night bleeding,- they probably couldn't help themselves." I responded in a soft voice. The stranger looked down at me with an unknown emotion in his eyes before a slow smile spread across his face. Not used to being smiled at I uncomfortably looked down at the floor and suddenly wondered where Knight was. "Where is my dog?" I questioned looking back at him.
He looked confused for a second before recognition flared in his eyes and he flickered his eyes by my feet. I followed his gaze and a bright smile consumed my face as I looked at Knight's sleeping figure.
"He's very protective of you, you know." He said bringing my attention back away from my dog.
"Yeah, we are all each other has. I've had him since he was a puppy and been with him every step of the way." He nodded once before going back to my side.
"You never told me what you want me to call you." He broke the silence after a while. I looked to the floor in embarrassment as my cheeks started to burn.
"You weren't exactly supposed to hear that, sorry." I mumbled before trying to move into a comfortable position. He held me down with his arm again before looking into my eyes.
"Don't move alright? Someone stitched you up pretty good, but It hasn't had a chance to heal right or been disinfected properly in a while and you could really hurt yourself." He sounded slightly worried and I basically turned into a statue afraid of anything getting worse. He smiled down at me before shaking his head and going back to work.
