Chapter 11: The Journey

Dani's prov

My forehead was against the cool window pane as I softly listened to both the 3 Days Grace crackling from the stereo and the conversation Colton and I were having mostly for his benefit. I was curled up in a ball in my seat, but I wasn't sure if it was because I was cold or it made be feel safer as I watched countless cars pass ours. I hated how I was acting to my core, but I just couldn't help it and no matter how much I wanted to we couldn't stay in Vera's house forever.

"Whose turn is it?" Colton softly asked effortlessly bring a smile to my face.

"Yours." I responded softly holding his hand he draped against the back of my seat.

"What finally made you agree to get in the car with me?" He asked eyeing me carefully before focusing back on the road.

"Well I realized that you make me feel less ...broken and incredibly special. I know now that I could never to leave you willingly so that means going to go anywhere you want to plus I couldn't kidnap you from your family any longer. I know how much they mean to you and how much you must mean to them. I'm being selfish enough as it is Cole." I answered looking out the window too chicken to see his face, but wincing when I caught my ... her reflection.

"Dani! What's wrong?" Colton asked as concern and protectiveness swirled in his unusually deep voice. I cursed myself and Colton for distracting me when a small smile lit up my face.

"It's not your turn Cole." I sweetly responded and caught my breath when I looked into his beautiful silver eyes that held a million emotions worry, annoyance, amusement, and admiration fought for the most control creating a small smile to blossom on my face as he responded with a simple word.

"Okay." He smiled at me once more before turning his eyes back to the road patiently waiting for the question I was going to ask. I wanted to drag out the silence until we got to his house, but I didn't want to sit there worrying about a million scenarios where his family would absolutely hate me plus I would miss hearing his calming voice if I wasted another second.

I turned my head and looked at him my eyes flew over every inch, appreciating every detail of this flawless angel in front of me. For the life of me I couldn't think of a single question we had been playing this game for weeks and I didn't know what was left to ask that wasn't stupid. Then I remembered why he was like me why he was broken. I didn't want to bring her up not knowing the pain he had felt or what he must have gone through losing his ...mate. Mate. That single word bugged me every fiber of my being was telling me I was his and he was mine, but what if I was wrong? It would literally kill me if I caused him the slightest ounce of pain. He peeked at me out of the corner of his eye when I was quiet for far too long making my cheeks heat up.

"Sorry, I don't know what's left to ask you." I meekly replied making him chuckle softly and nod in return. It gave me yet another reason to love this wolf man which sparked an idea in my mind. "What was your favorite place to go as a wolf?" I asked instantly proud of my question when it made his eyes soften and created a smile to coat his lips.

"There was this one place our pact stumbled on when we had just parted with our old pack. The little ones were just pups and were whining about being tired so we followed the faintest scent of water in the air. We ended up at the bottom of a waterfall surrounded by the softest grass and little wildflowers peeking out of the rocks." He smiled as if he could just picture that place again and for a split second he was there.

"That sounds beautiful." I quietly said breaking him out of his trance and before I could wish him to forget about when I saw my reflection he was already talking.
