Chapter 4: Discoveries

Mattie’s prov

A soft breeze swirled around me and a soft song chirped causing my nose to twitch before my eyes fluttered open. I looked around the unfamiliar room in confusion as I let my eyes adjust to the peeling flower covered wallpaper as memories from the past couple of days flashed across my eyes. I looked around the room in despair before looking for Knight in a panic before my gaze landed on his sleeping form next to me. I held my head in my hands as I tried to calm myself down.

Could I really get away with escaping from a hospital and leaving my life behind me while living in an abandoned house in the middle of the woods? Just thinking about it made my head hurt so I curled up in a ball trying to figure out what I was going to do next. It seemed like hours before Knight even moved. His giant black head shifted onto my uninjured side and I lightly traced patterns on his velvet fur lulling him back to sleep as my mind raced. Realizing my thoughts were just running in circles I ended up just looking around the room trying to guess who lived here.

By any judge of the flower theme in the room from the wall paper to the sheets on the bed and even the curtains it was a girl's room. At least we had one thing in common I thought making myself smile. I looked around to the few things in the medium sized room silently in awe of how everything was left perfect compared to the other rooms I had seen when I came into the house. I kissed Knights head before I slowly got out of bed and almost laughed when he just moved to the spot I was just laying in the bed searching for warmth in his sleep.

I went up to the desk that had a full mirror attached to it that I avoided looking in at all costs fearing what I would see in the reflection. I ran my fingers over the glass bottles of perfume and the soft bristles of a vanity brush before running my hands along the smooth dust covered surface of the desk. I whipped my hand on ‘Walt’s’ sweatshirt before wrapping my hand against the cool metal drawer handle and softly pulling it open. A few makeup tools met my hazel gaze along with a few stray pieces of paper.I carefully sat down in the desk chair before I looked at the papers.

One was a love letter to a girl named Vera Marx my gaze drifted across the hand written declaration from a man named Peter. It said...

My Dearest Vera,

You are the most beautiful girI I'd ever seen. You simply took my breath away when I had first laid my eyes on you. The way that soft pink dress brought out your baby blue eyes and the slight pink in your cheeks made my heart pound. Now I know that you my love, Ms. Marx are spoken for, but I know you feel this too. You can lighten up the brightest of rooms with just a look with your gorgeous eyes or your glowing smile. I love you with all my heart and my life revolves around you. I promise that if you choose me love, I will do everything in my power to keep that stunning smile of yours on your delicate face. You are my whole world Vera and I know that you’ve already gotten me wrapped around your little finger, but I promise you I have never been happier. You are my soulmate darling and I could never picture my life without you. Please meet me at our special spot in the woods tonight. I love you so much and I can’t wait to see you.

Sincerely,

Your true love Peter Black.

My breath caught in my throat at the beautiful letter as I carefully folded It back up and ran my finger against the ruby colored wax seal before I set it down on the desk. The next scrap of paper made me smile when I saw ‘Vera Rose Marks and Peter William Black Forever’ written in beautiful cursive in what i’m guessing is her handwriting. The next was a picture of who i'm guessing is  Vera and Peter gazing at eachother like everything else melted away. They were both gorgeous, but looked like total opposites. Vera with her big blue eyes, pale skin, long blonde almost white locks, and petite build while Peter had tanned skin, dark chocolate colored hair, dark green eyes, and was very muscular. Lastly there was a beautiful sketch drawing of a black wolf and a white wolf laying in a field together creating the yin and yang circle with their bodies. The word ‘Solemates’ was carefully written on the top in what I'm guessing is Vera's handwriting.

I softly placed the papers back in their spot before I looked at the only other piece of furniture in the room. The dresser was made from the same wood as the bed and the desk and I softly tugged on the top of the three drawers that revealed an array of dresses. I softly touched the soft fabric before I quickly recognized the pink dress Peter must had first seen Vera in making a soft smile cross my face. The second drawer had corset styled bras, underwear, and tights and the last was empty with only a necklace peeking out of one of the corners.

I picked up the beautiful metal design and my side erupted in a fiery heat instantly making me collapse and scream out in pain. I heard Knight jump off the bed and run to my side before he started whimpering in confusion. I realized I hadn’t even glanced at my side since I was bitten and I slowly tugged the navy sweatshirt and patient gown up with shaking hands. I gasped at the blood soaked bandage that started a couple centimeters above my black boy short underwear around my whole side and went halfway up my back. I bit my lip as another surge of pain ripped through me, but I hurt so much I couldn’t hold back the agonizing screams that poured out of my lips.

Suddenly Knight turned around and took a protective stance over my pain riddled body as he started a warning growl. I heard a pounding of feet and my back stiffened on instinct straining my side and another scream of pain ripped through my body. Dots started to swarm in my vision as Knight’s growls became threatening and he bared his teeth before the door opened and he started snapping at the stranger.”Who are you? Call off your mutt!!” a deep voice rumbled. I tried to look up at the stranger, but only hurt my side in the process making me squeal out in pain like an animal. “God, What happened? What's your name?” The voice called out again. I became extremely tired and my eyes started to flutter shut, but I tried to fight it. “Come on, answer me.” I coughed before swallowing hard. “Bi-te” I muttered before another scream left my lips.

“Hold on, What's your name?” He called out again I just shook my head I hated my name everyone who knew it hated me “Alright, alright what do you want me to call you then?” I fought through the drowsiness and cracked my hazel eyes open to look at the man in disbelief; had I said that outloud? When his figure met my gaze I looked at him in confusion before I coughed again. “Peter?” The man looked so much like the picture I had found, but that had to have been so long ago.

“You want me to call you Peter? I mean if thats what you want then okay,but-”. I coughed again cutting him off before taking a breath of air. “No-are-you?” I questioned before another surge of pain cut into my side making uncontrollable tears slip down my face as more screams raked out of my sore throat. Knight was still protecting me and growling at the stranger not trusting him at all while the stranger was trying to get a better look at me. “Kn-Knight move baby.” I ordered my best friend.

He looked back at me and I reassured him with a smile before he stopped growling and walked closer to me. He curled his body around my head like a protective shield before licking my face. The stranger looked at the dog with wide eyes before slowly walking closer to me under Knight’s watchful glare. “No I'm not Peter... but I thats my uncle's name do you know him?" he asked. I shook my head until the room started spinning out of control. "Please-help." I whispered pleading to the unknown stranger before my breathing got heavier and seconds later my eyes rolled back in my head dragging me into the darkness.
