Making An Impact
I could have used this space to write about the election that just happened. But I feel like it's all anyone's been talking about recently and I don't feel I could add anymore to the discussion.Instead I'm going to write about Kony 2012...
Okay, no I'm not. But I recently watched a Ted Talk about a girl who helped the organization Invisible Children. If you don't know what Ted Talks are, they are videos of public speakers on a YouTube like website. Each video shows a different speaker from kids to adults talking about different topics. Videos about Education, Race, Struggles, Traveling, and so much more. They are organized in genes like Happiness, Fascinating and Inspiring. and so much. The one I watched was about making an impact as a teenager which I was surprised to see it was about that organization but I'm glad I watched it.This video got me thinking about what I have done to make a difference. How teenagers can make a difference in the world around us. We spend so much time feeling helpless that we never b take the time to look back at our accomplishments.
It took me a while to remember something worth mentioning. Luckily I managed to come up with something.
My freshman year I volunteered at the elementary school I had attended. They have an after school program that I once was a part of. I tried to volunteer there as much as I could but I always had something to do for cheer. But once the cheer season ended, I went to the school a few times a week.
There I helped kids with homework, did at projects, and played games. I remember a day when a bunch of the kids drew pictures for me. I held on to those for a long time.
I always knew I'd go back and volunteer with that program once I reached high school. I remember how much I loved seeing the volunteers everyday. They weren't like or group leaders, they wisent adults getting paid to work there. These were high schoolers that chose to spend their v time with us, with the added benefit of volunteer hours.
I didn't realize how I could influence these kids lives.
I think everyone should take some time to volunteer. Do something for your community, even if it's just one day. I once woke up at four in the morning to meet my cheer team at a local park. There we did Zumba to wake us up and got ready to cheer on 5k runners. We were there from starting line to the finish line late in the afternoon. Pompoms in hand and smiles on our faces. Each runner was thankful that we were there for them.
So go on and volunteer. You'll be able to impact people's lives and make a change.
