The Reason

3 weeks later...

(Natsu's POV)

Everyone was sitting quietly in the guild, exhausted from having searched far and wide for anything to help Lucy. I look down at my scarf and pull it gently from my neck revealing Lucy's heart and key that I tucked safely between the folds. "Hey Luce." I could feel everyone look up at me, but I promised to talk to Lucy everyday until we could bring her back. "I'm sorry that we're taking longer than we expected. But we aren't giving up, we're still looking. I promise Luce we will save you." I could smell the salty tears begin to form in everyone's eyes as I spoke into the lacrima. "We love you Luce, just hang in there." I felt a tear stream down my face.

(General POV)
The guild doors flew open and Levy came flying in Gajeel and Lily trailing close behind her. "I figured it out." She yelled completely out of breath. "I know what's wrong with Lucy." Everyone quickly surrounded Levy waiting for an explanation. She slammed a book on the table.

"Isn't that the book that you got from that old cross guy in the spirit world Levy?" Natsu asked

"Yes Natsu you're exactly right, it's a book about Celestial Wizards, I hadn't had the chance to read it until now and there is so much we don't know about Lucy." She gasped trying to take in as much air as possible. "Apparently the reason that most Celestial wizards run out of magic so quickly is because they don't use normal magic like the rest of us. They're an anomaly kind of like Dragon slayers, Their magic is directly linked to their hearts, their feelings. That's why celestial wizards are so rare, you have to be born with a strong heart to even gain the ability to wield it. Additionally the stronger their hearts and their feelings the stronger their spirits, that's why Lucy's spirits can cross into our world freely. Her heart is pure and filled with love." Levy paused to take in another breath of air. Hearing that Lucy's love is what makes her strong made Natsu clench her heart and key.

"That explains why she fit in with everyone immediately, she even changed the way I look at things." Bikslow said with sadness in his voice.

"So what's wrong with Lucy?" Wendy asked
     "Yes, Juvia would also like to know."
Levy looked up from her book and spoke with a great deal of seriousness "Her heart is broken" Natsu grunted, hearing this was only making him angry but he needed to know what was wrong with Lucy and how to save her. "I started to piece it together when I read that their magic is directly connected to their hearts, and their life energy is stored in their hearts. That's why they have to have strong hearts, or else the first time they felt sadness they would die.'

"Given Lucy's history with her father, that's clearly not the case here." Laxas suddenly spoke

"I don't know what happened to break it, but that is definitely what's wrong. Lucy is dying because something or someone broke her heart.

"I think I know what it was." Mira quietly said with sadness in her voice as she made her way to the middle of the crowd that had formed around Levy.

"Well what is it? Tell me who broke Lucy's heart, so I can break them." Natsu yelled.

"You did Natsu." Mira said so quiet it was almost a whisper.

Everyone turned and looked at Natsu. "Way to go Flame Brain." Gray shouted as he punched Natsu in the face. He wound up to take another swing but Natsu merely caught it with his hand and threw Gray back.

"What do you mean I broke her heart? I didn't even say anything to her that would."

"You didn't have to say anything Natsu." Mira said, her sadness still lingering on her voice. Natsu's face filled with tears, pain and anger. "I suppose I should start at the beginning. Today is Lucy's birthday." Mira sighed

"Really, we've all been so busy that we must have forgotten. But what does that have to do with Lucy's situation. Lissanna asked quietly

"Can any of you remember wishing Lucy a happy birthday last year?" Everyone looked at each other shaking their heads, even Natsu couldn't remember having done so. "I take that as a no, not a single member of her family celebrated the day that she born." Mira said quietly "Think of how sad that would make any of you."

"Why didn't she tell anyone?" Gray said his voice filled with anger.

"Juvia would also like to know why Lucy didn't tell anyone."

Mira sighed and looked at Lisanna. "Lisanna before I continue, you should know that Lucy in no way blamed you. She was very happy that we got you back."

"What is that supposed to mean, why would she blame Lisanna." Levy asked.

"Two weeks before her birthday last year was the day everyone returned from Edolas. Everyone was so excited and still celebrating Lisanna's return that everyone, even myself forgot her birthday. When I was finally able to pull the reason behind her sadness out of her, she told me not to worry and not to tell anyone else. She said that Lisanna's return was a far grander thing to celebrate. Then she left on a job and didn't come back for a few weeks, things got busy and I forgot all over again. To make matters worse. When Lucy came back from her job she confessed to me that she had fallen in love with a certain pink haired Dragon Slayer." Everyone stared in shock at Natsu. Mira giggled a little, "Yes everyone our very own Natsu stole Lucy's heart. After weeks of wearing her down I finally convinced her to tell him how she truly felt about him."
