serpent

she emerged from the dress
like a snake shedding its skin.
the girl was breaking out
of what she used to be
and becoming.
the dress fell away,
revealing her.
the topography of her back
was smooth hills and valleys.
her hair cascaded down
like a gentle avalanche
and lofted the sweet smell
of her conditioner at my nose.
she turned and looked at me and
smiled that smirk
because she knows
she's beautiful.
