Chapter 2, A New Light
When I opened my eyes, I was afraid I would see my father's face and he would hit meㅡbut when I did, all I saw was a new face. He has a really nice pair of eyes and there's a warm smile on his lips. At that moment, I thought he is the most beautiful person I have ever seen in my whole life.
When he moved back, the light struck my eyes and I closed them again.
"Ah, I'm sorry." He said and he went back to his position earlier so he could prevent the light from hurting my eyes which I opened again after a few seconds. "How are you feeling?" He asked.
I didn't answer. I wanted toㅡbut it was like I've lost the ability to speak normally.
He smiled again. I wish I could see that smile in every day of my life. It makes me feel good in a way I never did before.
"Are you hungry? I'll get you something to eat." He said.
Again, I didn't answer, but my stomach did for me as it made a grumbling sound.
Sungjae laughed shortly, but it was a really nice sound. "Wait for me here."
I wish he didn't leave. I'm afraid to be alone.
While he was away, a lady in an all-white attire came and checked my condition. I just looked at her and wondered why she's taking care of me.
I bent my head down a little as she left after telling me I'm doing well on my recovery.
Just as I was laying back down, Yook Sungjae came with a tray of food. I noticed he's wearing the same clothes I have and then I remembered that he was stabbed by my father. My eyes widened and he seemed worried of my sudden reaction.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
When I lifted my finger to point at his stomach, it was trembling.
"Ah," He said in comprehension. "Don't worry. I'm okay, and you're okay too."
He smiled when he saw my face calmed down. "Aigoo, you seem nice." He said. "For now, you need to eat something. Okay?"
I nodded.
"Good girl."
When he set up the meal for me, I noticed his right hand was wrapped in a bandage too.
He must've noticed I was looking at it because he said, "It's just a small cut. Don't worry about me. Just concentrate on getting better."
I'm wrapped in bandagesㅡmy arms, my legs, my neck, my face and even my waist. I looked around and realized I'm in a very comfortable room. If I'm in the hospital, I didn't imagine it would look like this. My mom told me it's were people with illness go to and that it's crowded.
I wanted to ask Sungjae many questions but I still couldn't find my tongue to speak.
Few days later, I heard I was getting discharged. I overheard Sungjae speaking to someone who seemed like a police too.
"Her father can go up to ten years or more in prison depending on the damage he made to the victim."
"Is he proved guilty?"
"Yes, but according to Hong Mari's condition, he's sentenced up to ten years only."
"He doesn't deserve to get out of the prison."
"Yook Sungjae, what are you gonna do with her now? It's not our responsibility to take care of her anymore. She would've been sent to an orphanage, but she's eighteen years old. They might make her live in that house again."
